On the soundtrack of Mario Bava's film 'Lisa and the Devil' you can hear a version of the slow movement with piano replacing guitar in the solo part.
I believe they used a recording by Paul Mauriat's orchestra.

I'd be curious too. I can say that the originals on Epic [LPs, of course] varied from okay to bad. The Columbia LP boxed set had faulty mastering. I've owned some of the titles on Sony's 'Essential Classics' series, marginally improved as regards the eq but also including more than a little bit of reverb added. There's a lot of good performances in the set, it would be nice to have a half-way decent transfer of the material.

The Szell/Haydn was a marked improvement over my previous Odyssey CDs.

Currently I have these on an early budget release from Sony. I know that later Sony released Szell's Beethoven in an original jackets edition. I wonder if it was remastered then.

Edit - the back of the box says 24 bit mastering, so it clearly postdates my set.

I'm listening to this interesting BBC disc of Estonian music conducted by 3 generations of Järvis.

My morning listening. Most of you know how I feel about the pianist here. But I have to say Mr. Kavakos is also something special.

I'll probably pick up the Szell/Beethoven when I next put together a package large enough to avoid shipping. Anyone have the Fleisher/Szell Beethoven/Brahms set? How's the sound on that?

As long as you can concentrate on the performance whatever the sonics then Fleisher / Szell are fine. It is a shame how many great performances, CBS messed up with their lousy recordings. Of course Szell himself contributed to that in his own way. But if hearing symphonies over an AM transistor radio sounds good then it won't be an issue.

In my experience, when Sony tries hard, they can make the Szell recordings acceptable. Certainly true for his Schumann on SACD. The Masterworks versin of the Brahms concertos with Fleisher is pretty good as well.

I was very surprised when I first ran across a Szell LP on Epic. To me the label meant The Yardbirds, Jeff Beck, Donovan & Sly Stone.

    Same here. Never forgot this:

Columbia's thin sonics overlaid with tape hiss. Nevertheless the music changed my life.

Anybody here aware of Khatia Buniatishvili, from Georgia? I heard her this year in LA doing the Chopin concerto, and it was a knockout! She's got some excellent Liszt and Chopin CDs!

Here she is with her sister Gvantsa doing the Dvorak Slavonic Dances, in an outdoor setting!

khatia + gvantsa buniatishvili / dvorak: slavonic dance op. 72

I heard that Szell had a pair of AR-3's under the couch, insisted on jacking up the treble on the LPs.

bluemooze, this is an excellent set IMO. I added the set to my Bach collection a few years ago ...

I've heard they were in the corner. Also heard that's merely a legend.

It's a core set for me. Worth taking a chance. But not until I find a way to spend another $20.
