An old favorite. I strongly suggest getting a copy of this, in any of its incarnations.

Hey George, thank you for the welcome. Yes, same thing here, especially Mravinsky. For some reason I was always on the fence with Haitink until I heard this performance. Never heard any of his Mahler, and I'm thinking about getting the set.

    For Mahler, I love Barbirolli's 6th.

Oh yes. Have it, love it. My favorite, along with Karajan's 6th. Have been listening to Levi's 6th lately. Very interesting performance and quite decent sound. And Szell's 6th ain't shabby at all:righton:

My first recordings of these works. My copy came as half of a two-LP budget Columbia set that coupled them with the Schumann concerto, also an old favorite and also my first recording of that work.

I have always liked Haitink, particularly when he conducted the RCO ...

I have some recordings by Andrew Parrott, who usually provided the middle-of-the-road approach to these sacred works. However, I much prefer the HIP performances by the likes of Harnoncourt, Leonhardt and Gardiner, etc.

Have you heard his Mahler cycle with the RCO? Any thoughts, comments, if you have?

Now listening to CD 1 - various works, from "Chopin - Oeuvres Pour Piano" by Cortot on EMI. Lots of noise from the original records but still listenable. This 6-disc set is from 1991. Probably the same recordings as on your Naxos but not mastered as well?

Some of the Cortot's Chopin recordings on Naxos Historical were reconstructed/remastered by Mark Obert-Thorn, the best in the business ...

I have the set and it is quite good with Haitink and the RCO at their best ...

And do you think there would be any difference soundwise between the 1994 Mahler set and the Mahler symphonies in the new Haitink Symphony Edition?

Händel's "Messiah" now, as usual the Dunedin Consort performance, since it's still the only one I've got.

That is hard to tell. The original Mahler Symphonies by Haitink/RCO were recorded by Philips, the best in the business IMO. Since Philips quit the music business, UniversalMusic is now the owner of the original master tapes, how good a remastering job on the original analog tapes the UM engineers have done is anyone's guess. Unfortunately, my set was issued by Decca, not by Philips. IIRC, the SQ is decent. The Haitink Symphony Edition set may not have newer remastered Mahler Symphonies but I do not know for sure ...

I have this set, along with twenty-some other versions. This set is definitely not among my top three, though the SQ may be the best. At any rate, the Handel Messiah, as arranged by WA Mozart and sung in German, is the worst version, no matter who the performers were. Too much woodwind and not enough string. Handel Messiah just does not sound right when it is not sung in English, as much as SMP does not sound right when performed in English or any other language other than German ...

I spent an evening sorting out the contents of that set, here's the review that I did for amazon:

Finally picked up this set, since it was dirt cheap here on amazon ($23.62 new for 6CDs.) The seller, Zoverstocks sent this big box in a padded bag, so the rear of one of the cases was damaged. Shame on you, Zoverstocks!

Since I already own a ton of Cortot's Chopin (because each one is a treasure), I wanted to find out how many of these performances I already had in my collection. Turns out a lot of it I didn't already have, which I am very happy about. In order to determine what I already had, I did a full inventory of the contents, using a discography and the liner notes, labeling the things that appear elsewhere on CD. For the curious, I will post the info here:

    20 -22 3 Nouvelles Etudes - 1949 - Naxos
    23 Prelude - Op. 45 - 1950 - Naxos

As you can see, only one performance is only available here. Wherever a Biddulph, Naxos or Pearl transfer is available, I suggest those transfers ahead of these. Unfortunately, all but the Naxos are now out of print. Hopefully Naxos will continue their series and cover everything.

The performances in this box set are wonderful! You just don't hear Chopin playing like this anymore, thus making Cortot's special way with Chopin that much more special and in my opinion, essential. Words really can't describe Cortot's playing, so I won't even try. Suffice to say that if you love Chopin, you owe it to yourself to get this set. I gave this set 5 stars, but I have to mention that EMI's (as usual) overfiltered transfers leave something to be desired. They cleaned up these mono recordings nice, but in doing so, washed away some of Cortot's lovely tone.

One last point, the reviewer who estimated that 75% of Chopin's recordings are here is incorrect. It's actually around 50%. Much of the remaining 50% is on Naxos Historical and I strongly recommend each and every one of those splendid issues. The transfers on Naxos are in another league compared to this set, but they unfortunately have not covered every performance in this set. Hopefully, they will eventually.

Since then, I have picked up this box and can strongly recommend it for great transfers and containing almost every Cortot recording:

Now listening to "Hildegard Von Bingen - Celestial Hierarchy" performed by Sequentia on DHM. Beautiful music, beautiful performance, beautiful sound.
This is the last in the series of Hildegard recordings by Sequentia, and unfortunately it is the only one without founding member Barbara Thornton who passed away in 2012.
