I guess the key is deciphering what the statement "DSD file created by Gus Skinas from the original Sony Super Audio CD cutting masters" means. "Cutting Masters" sounds like going to the master tapes prepared for the SACD, but not a rip of the SACD itself.

The person who analyzed the SACD layer appears to have processed his differently than mine. He used a DST64 codec, what is that? and a lower sample rate 176.4khz. Mine was DSD64 with the full sample rate.

The cutting master is the file used to make an SACD. The data on the SACD and in the download are the same.

DST = Direct Stream Transfer = lossless audio codec for DSD, which is required for a M-ch SACD like Mysterious Traveller

Why are the peak values different?

  4. testikoff

TT DR & peak values may depend on what DSD-to-PCM conversion algorithm & filter (IIR or FIR) were used in both cases. One should use some serious filtering during DSD-to-PCM conversion, especially with 352.8 kHz PCM sampling rate (which is an overkill with DSD64/DST64, IMO).

To illustrate my earlier point here are 2 DSD-to-PCM conversions (I took track 7 from Shelby Lynne - Just A Little Lovin' DSD download and converted it to 24/352 DXD with installable FIR30 digital filter & without any filtering at all). This release is also notoriously quiet (below -6dBFS DSD or -12dBFS PCM). See the waveforms produced by these DSD2PCM modes below:

    - Installable FIR (FIR30):
    WALMJ-FIR30.jpg

    - Multistaging (unfiltered):
    WALMJ-MS.jpg

The peak values for these 2 tracks are dramatically different (so are their RMS values), due to rather extreme levels of high frequency noise in unfiltered track. The TT DR numbers, however, differ very slightly:

Oh, using DXD for DSD64-to-PCM conversions is a total overkill, IMO (24/88 or 24/176 should be sufficient considering the necessary filtering)...

The studio tracks on EW&F's "Gratitude" sound really nice both SQ and musically. The live tracks are good. Very nice purchase.

Rocks got the best reviews over in the HDTracks thread. I can't confirm it or point to anything definitive, but I suggested in the other thread that these are the same as the "mastered for iTunes" issues, which came out in 2012. Whatever the source, they are louder than the 1993 remasters, but not excessively so. (The DRs are 8-10 for most tracks, weighted toward the 8 side of things.). I think they sound ... not bad at all.

I wonder if the Sony DSD files for the Aerosmith Rocks SACD are still on a drive somewhere...

    DSD - $21.98
    24/96 PCM - $9.98

That is just crazy. Which is a conversion?

  19. Not a response to the question, but I wasn't aware that there were any EPs on the HiRez sites. Does anyone know if there are others?

The new Springsteen EP is out there. Apparently there is a huge price discrepancy between HDtracks and QoBuz for this release.

This never came out on SACD, to the best of my knowledge. This DSD transfer is a unique item. But did it comes first, or was this sourced from the 24/96 files?

You are correct, I should have checked SA-CD.net .
