I like this box set, especially for the care that is taken with the early symphonies. I wouldn't say that the early ones are dismissed, but more attention is usually paid to the later works.

I am pretty sure neither bluemooze nor myself will be going for the big box by the A4 ...

This is the best Schubert Symphonies set out there and I was very impressed even on my first listen from 2 or 3 years ago ... :righton:

    Have you heard Abbado?

No. As a matter of fact, I do not have any Schubert Symphonies by Abbado.

Do you know if it's as good as his Mendelssohn? I also have not heard Abbado's Schubert.

I bought the Abbado box, but so far I've only listened to the early Mendelssohn symphonies, with which I was really not familiar. I can say that I prefer the Abbado to HvK's EMI recordings.

Here's a lengthy review with a comparison to Harnoncourt.

Thanks. I will listen to the samples. Not that I need another Schubert set right now, but how many of us buy music only based on need? [IMG]

I have owned this set for a few years and it is quite good. I have the Beethoven Symphonies conducted by Harnoncourt with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, the same orchestra Abbado conducted for the Schubert set ...

The CD's in this box must be all recordings originally recorded on the Philips label, as Grumiaux recorded exclusively for Philips ...

That's a tasty looking box, I'd love to know more about it.

Philips always made the best recordings during the analog era. As long as the remastering was done right, the SQ for this box should be quite good ...

Actually, Regis usually does not remaster. For me, this is a good thing.

Regis must have licensed the remasters from UniversalMuisc because Grumiaux never made any digital recordings during his lifetime ...

Looks like I have most of this set already (and they should have included his superb Mozart violin sonatas with Haskil):

A 7-CD set, in a slim-line wallet box, which features one the most iconic violinists of the twentieth century. Grumiaux is presented in performances of all the Mozart Violin Concertos, a complete set of Beethoven Violin Sonatas and concertos by Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Brahms and Lalo.

Beethoven: Violin Sonatas Nos. 1-10 (Complete)
Brahms: Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77
Lalo: Violin Concerto in F major, Op. 20
Mendelssohn: Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64
Mozart: Violin Concertos Nos. 1-5 (Complete)
Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35
