One of my favorites. Bartok's Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. I have several recordings and enjoy them all, but Kocsis just might have the edge both performance and soundwise.

What's the best Beethoven's 9th on cd or hi-res? I like the Solti and Karajan on vinyl.

 

That's really tough. There have to be over 100 versions, possibly several hundred. I like Klemperer, but I am probably a minority of 1.

I also have to admit I don't listen to the 9th Symphony all that often.

 

Now enjoying CD 2 from the above set, mastered by Ward Marston.

 

This Cd is a fun one to listen to.

 

I would get at least one modern recording. This is my favorite recent recording.

 

I too like the Klemperer, but my favorite is Haitink/Concertgebouw on Phillips, live recording. Great energy and majestic reading.

 

Vanska records exclusively for BIS but I really do not know much about him. How is his Beethoven?

 

Some say he lacks fire and emotion and his readings sound sterile. I think they sound great IMO. The sonics are fantastic. The fourth movement in the 9th is awesome IMO. I have the complete cycle of his Beethoven Symphonies.

 

I know, I'm biased. But I think this is an amazing disc.

 

I have Haitink with the LSO. Also live. I need to give it another listen.

 

All my BIS CD's sound good, even those early ones. I don't think I need another Beethoven cycle ...

 

I have the impression that Haitink's old Beethoven cycle recorded with RCO on Philips may actually be better than the later LSO version. I only have the 9th from that earlier cycle and it is great performance with lots of energy ...

 

Now playing the following Sweelinck's CD, which arrived yesterday for a first listen ...

 

On the turntable this evening…what I love about this is that it is the true live experience...the clearing of throats and coughing in the audience, the tuning of instruments between movements. They just ran tape. Cool.

 

Just completed listening to CD6 from the following set for a first listen - an excellent performance. It is a shame that L'Oiseau-Lyre never completed recording all the Haydn Symphonies with the AAM under Hogwood ...

You might check out the Stokowski 9th on Decca. He had an excellent quartet in Harper, Watts, McIntyre and Young and his performance has been highly rated for many years..
