Each generation insists on believing that, despite all available evidence, it invented sex.

The writers for those shows put in all sorts of innuendo that modern people don't even detect, it's so subtle by modern standards. partly out of boredom or to see if they could.

 

Rocky: "What kind of game can you play with girls?"
Bullwinkle: "Boy, this really is a children's show, isn't it?"

 

The subtlety or innuendo is what made it funny and entertaining.
Just as the method of showing a couple embracing and then panning away. The viewer gets the idea without showing it.
Today's approach of everything in your face is what is not entertaining for me. Even commercials for every kind of bodily function on tv these days, and the one about picking up dog excrement.

I think telling a story and delivering a message in movies and tv was FAR more artful and thoughtful by using innuendo and sublety.

 

I agree completely. Most people under a certain age just are oblivious to this.

 

I was watching Toby Tortoise Returns, a Disney Silly Symphony from the 30s with my two granddaughters today. Toby, who is slower compared to the Hare and is fighting the Hare in a boxing ring and gets thrown out onto the lap of a lady chick aka Mae West. The lady chick says, "I like a man who takes his time." So it goes back further than 60s TV shows.

 

Another one from the Desi-Lucy Show, from Lucy Takes A Summer Vacation, where Lucy wants a romantic getaway with Ricky, without the Mertzes:
Ricky: What can we do alone?
Lucy: Are you sure you're a hot blooded Latin male?

 

I know this is an old thread but...I have some of the later "lost" Dick Van Dyke shows and tragically, all subtlety had gone out the window by then.

 

Not only that, but a complete audio tape of the broadcast portion of that show exists, and it does not contain that exchange. So in the unlikely event that Groucho did say it, the only people who heard it were the studio audience members. Anyone who remembers hearing it broadcast is incorrect.

 

This is an early 1970s example -just now heard a rather shocking line from the second pilot movie of The Six Million Dollar Man. Steve Austin (Lee Majors) is escaping from a boat by tearing through the wall. He had spent some intimate time with Britt Ekland before tying her up. As Steve is escaping, he tells Ekland "Sorry I had to violate your porthole."

 

Another line from the same TV movie:

Steve prompts an explosion to take place, and sentimentalizes how it is payback for the deaths of two friends.
Britt Ekland: I think I understand better why they say American men are soft.
Steve: Well like I said, we rise to the occasion.

 

On Laugh-in Season 1 Episode 3, Cher was the guest and there was a sketch where she played Pocahontas, and the punch line was along the lines of 'Even John Smith got to Pocahontas'. The clip was included in an Anniversary special years ago.

 

Just watching the third Six Million Dollar Man pilot. Steve is in another intimate situation.

It's not TV, but I was actually quite shocked when reading a Best of Archie Comics retrospective-the earliest stories from the 1940s were a little, er, rough around the edges. There's even a disclaimer at the beginning of one of the books that the stories reflect their times and would not be altered for historical reasons.
In one 1943 story, Betty and Veronica are volunteer nurses, but they neglect to provide food to some of the patients. One patient yells, "What are we, in a Nazi concentration camp?"
(I'm sure the writer regretted that one a couple of years later)
In another 1943 story, B and V think an older guy on a plane is trying to fool around with them. Veronica calls the man a "sex maniac."

Going forward to the late 1970s or early 1980s, their most brilliant script writer Frank Doyle went to the edge a couple of times. In one story, Archie and Betty are especially hot and steamy in a kissing session. When they are interrupted by Jughead, they're both sweating and flushed.
And in another story, Veronica is warning Archie not to be too friendly with a gorgeous girl he has to escort. Archie tells her not to worry, he wouldn't do anything with her he hadn't done with Veronica. Veronica gasps and says "don't you dare!"A shocked Mr. Lodge is ready to have a stroke and grounds Veronica.
Ever since then, with the exception of the Archie as adult in alternate Riverdale universe comics, the series has been quite dumbed down.
