Speaking of which, have you listened to his Finlandia and the VC with Ferras on DGG?

The Kempff/Schneiderhan set was probably compiled from recordings made over 50 years ago ...

Yes, I'm aware of that of course. What I meant was that the remastering on the Kempff/Schneiderhan set could probably have been better, they could at least have tamed the sound of the violin somewhat, it's way too shrill/harsh.

When it comes to remastering, the large classical labels are not very consistent in the quality department ...

...and if you do, don't neglect his songs. I think of him foremost as a skilled and original songsmith.

I am somewhat disappointed with the sound quality of the following remastered set that was recently released ...

The complete sets by Rafael Kubelík/Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (DG) and Witold Rowicki/London Symphony Orchestra (Decca) are pretty good, too, in my opinion.

    Yes!

It is as an audio alchemist, I do believe, that Ives opened the door to Stockhausen. This is post-polyphony, we are now in the realm of simultaneity and synchronicities. Second Orchestra Set is my absolute favorite, better dust off my old Stokowski/Phase 4 LP.

I have the DG twofer of Dvorak Symphonies Nos 7-9 but should really get the box. Given Kubelik's background, Dvorak Symphonies should be a natural for him ... :righton:

Excellent performance by two Canadian soloists and an American conductor ...

Both excellent choices and to me on par with Neumann(Supraphon)...for alternate choices of excellence we have to reach out for single recordings of Dvorak symphonies, like for instance by Karel Ancerl.......

PS A "dark horse" (full cycle) to be considered :

Listened to HvK take a stab at Vaughan Williams' "Fantasia . . .Tallis." Not a match made in heaven.

Now checking out Abbado's Brahms 2nd.

This must be the first recording of Dvorak's works by Kubelik ...

Is this an LP set? My CD art work is different IIRC ...

Nope, it's the first CD edition of this set, released in 1989-1991 (first in 2 separate fatboy jewel cases, then those 2 fatboys together in a slipcase, the set I have). You probably have the reissued set:

As July 4 has patriotic implications here in the US, I decided to start my day hearing some US composers. Mehta, with bigger than life, Decca sound in Los Angeles, does a wonderful Appalachian Spring.

Kubelík recorded the 9th with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Mercury) and the 7th with the Philharmonia Orchestra (EMI) in 1953. The recordings with the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra date from 1956.

P.S. I used the current numbering.
