Emma Kirkby, Christopher Hogwood and the AAM have set the golden standard for these works that no later recordings have been able to match. I have the version by Minkowski as well but really do not think it is even competitive with this 30 year recording ... :righton:

Popp also was the soprano on Tennstedt's Mahler 4. Great album.

And if enough people break a rule, that becomes the new rule. :sigh:

Thanks for the information. I have not had a chance to listen to them yet.

Interesting--I have a number of MK issues, but I've never before seen that "MK" stood for "Mezhdunarodnaya Kniga." Any of our Russian speakers care to translate that? And while we're about it, my "record jacket" training in Russian and Cyrillic characters is just about good enough to puzzle out that the record is of the Beethoven concerto played--I think!--by Leonid Kogan and the USSR SO, but could you confirm/correct that and flesh it out with the conductor? Really striking cover art, by the way.

Alas, poor Subjunctive! I knew him, Horatio...

I did not find a good discography for Leonid Kogan. Since he recorded it more than once, this may have no bearing on your disc, but I have a live version of Leonid Kogan playing the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the USSR State TV and Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Gennady Rozhdestvensky on 12/27/1970.

Just completed listening to Bruckner 9th - still not quite half-way through the following box for a first listen. The remastering quality is quite good ...

I just cannot get over how nice most of these early day CD's by Denon actually sound. It is clear there is more than just the number of bits that determine the SQ of a CD ...

While Emma is great with most early music, she excels in baroque works, particularly those vocal works by Handel ... :righton:

So the SQ on the Bruckners is better on your box than in this one?

I don't have the Bruckner box, which was released after the Symphony Edition box. Regardless, Karajan only recorded the Bruckner cycle with the BPO once.
