Are we talking about the RAI (Italian Radio) 'Ring" from 1953?

Probably. I was thinking of Furtwängler's RIAS (Berlin) recordings. I think I might have misunderstood Robin L's post in that respect. If so, my apologies.

If you keep close track of the pearls of wisdom that I dispense to this esteemed audience, as I'm sure you all do , you may recall that about a week ago I inquired about recordings of Alfven's The Prodigal Son. Well, I started looking around, and courtesy of an Amazon marketplace seller I snared a copy of the suite as conducted by the composer himself, issued by Westminster on a mono LP.

Yesterday, both halves arrived in the mail.

Too bad the halves weren't joined.

Yes, thanks to somewhat indifferent packing, the record snapped in two while passing through the postal service. :cussing:

Oh, well, there's still a copy available on Amazon--"collectible," asking price $75.

There are a couple of performances (including the one on Naxos) available on Spotify.

Most books are something I read once and get rid of.More room for records that way.:D

I have no attachment to physical media as far as the printed word is concerned.

I have bought few books since I discovered the public library as a child. I usually have about twice as many as I'll have time to read checked out.

The Japanese SACDs of WF are all badly EQ'd in my book.

The HMV Ring was issued in the 1970's for the first time.

There was no RIAS Ring by Furtwangler anyway.

Blended, yes. However, in the mean time, it is not concealed that Suk has greater skill and richer tones than the others have, at least on my CD from the 1980s..
BTW your copy looks like a gold CD. I've never seen it before. Interesting.

To each his own.......to me the Smetana Quartet+Suk Mozart Quintet performances from the early eighties are stand-out interpretations, with Suk benefiting from the Smetana Quartet`s experience and at the same time he infuses additional energy to this well attuned unit providing some further backbone to this Mozart pieces......btw don`t get me wrong, Suk worked between 1979-1986 as a teacher at the Music College in Vienna and during that time I had the chance to witness his brilliant artistry and skills several times.....

I never said so. I was thinking of Furtwängler's RIAS recordings in general, see my explanation in post #852. It was a misunderstanding.

Can you still easily find these Denon CD's in Europe or where you are?

Are you specifically referring to the RAI Ring cycle SACDs? The UK EMI issues do tend to have excessive noise reduction but my experience with Japanese issues has been much more positive. There is no flat transfer even with the original LPs, In addition, there is the new source tape which is exclusive to the Japanese SACDs.

No. I am referring to the Japan SACD of WF in general. The Toshiba old CDs are much better.

    Regarding my ill-fated Alfven purchase:

Thanks for the suggestion and the sympathy. Alas, I'm not a Spotify subscriber, but I have addressed the issue: I bought another copy of (presumably) the same performance on a Swedish Society Discofil; it cost twice as much, but the other side is another Alfven composer's recording where the Westminster had something led by Stig Westerburg, so perhaps it all evens out.

Assuming, of course, it makes the trip through the mail safely! :sigh:
