I have this recording on CD. IIRC, this may be the only recording Emma made with John Eliot Gardiner ...

IIRC, Furtwangler referred to Karajan as "the OTHER conductor" when their rivalry was heating up ...

And not only that, but she only sings on the cantata, not the Magnificat.

Really? I have never paid much attention to the individual track listings even though I have played the CD a number of times since I bought it in the late 80's or early 90's ...

After mostly lurking and liking, and being continually inspired by this thread, I'm going to try and post more often.

(Promise or warning? Time will tell.) :nauga:

In part I'm doing this to mark ten years of becoming a committed classical music enthusiast. I had finally been pushed all the way into this passion of buying and listening by attending two harrowing and transcendent concerts within a few weeks in the spring of 2004: the Emerson Quartet doing Beethoven's Quartet No. 13 with the Grosse Fugue in Santa Fe, and Gideon Kremer doing Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 2 with Christoph Eschenbach and the Philadelphia Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. Really difficult, sad, dissonant, haunting, overwhelming music.

Found this while on vacation for $4. Virtually mint, and I think a fantastic performance, save for the principal trumpet…he is pretty out of tune in spots.

I've got a mono pressing of this LP. Will give it a listen. Does your copy have a momentous write-up on the back cover extolling the wonders of Dynagroove? I get the impression history has not been kind to the Dynagroove sound (as opposed the the skinny little Dynaflex LPs of the early 70's)....

I also picked one of these up…I had never seen this 3 disc set before, and being the CSO junkie I am, I went ahead and paid $5 for it (the guy wanted $3 per disc but he gave me a deal). Haven't spun any of it yet, but the discs look virtually unplayed. My copy does not have gold around the edges, the box is light blue in color, virtually the same as the blue in the cover art.

Indeed it does…I have several Dynagroove LPs and some sound very good (to my ear) and some are duds. This one is a definite "good egg." It also has a sheet that contains a little background on the symphony, and quotes from reviews of the Boston performances Leinsdorf gave. This being 1963 and performing Mahler was becoming more widespread, I think RCA wanted to hype up their product (and the BSO with Leinsdorf) as much as they could.

Lighted-hearted and secular baroque choral works. This was probably only my second listen since I bought the CD some 20 years ago ... LOL

I could easily mistake Judith for Emma if I wasn't paying attention. :)

Now playing the following CD from my JS Bach cantatas collection and more Emma. It is a small world as the lead violinist of the Purcell Quartet, Catherine MacKintosh was in fact the first violinist with the AAM under Christopher Hogwood ...
