I really wouldn't know. The only three Haenssler CD's that I have are by her. I'm by no means familiar with the label's output. :hide:

People here, have been discussing -how unfamilar they are with ...Delius??!! I am staggered. It is time they got started getting familar with the complete symphonies of say Bax, Alwyn, or Malcom Arnold etc . 'They wont bite!':)

We should start recommending our "most favorite neglected works/CDs."

Speaking of the English, I'd like to put a good word in for the under-appreciated William Walton...

While I have a good number of CD's by this independent German label, I am really not familiar with its roster of artists except Helmut Rilling, Colin Davis and Neville Marriner. But Sir Colin and Sir Neville really did not make as many recordings as Rilling has ...

WW is under appreciated? I guess on the concert stage he is not played very often so in that sense he is.

Just sayin'. Walton doesn't get much love in these threads.
BTW, I loaned my only copy of Belshazzar's Feast out long ago and never got it back. Got a favorite to recommend?

The Rattle/Harrell Symphony #1 coupled with the Cello Concerto is a favorite of mine.

Just yesterday I was enjoying Mahler 7 with Michael Gielen on Haenssler. I think he did the whole cycle on that label.
Geilen pulls a fine performance from this underdog band. Excellent sonics, too.

I have the BSQ recording and think it is pretty good. The Alban Berg Quartet disc is my favorite though.

Okay, so last night I listened to Jacqueline’s and Sol’s Elgar concerto. I had the same impression listening to each one, and this reinforced my past listening experiences.

I can’t write literately in musical terms, so bear with me please.

I feel like when he was writing this, he came up with a nice musical idea, and wrote a few bars of it. Then he thought of something else and threw in few bars of that. He then conceived another musical idea and added a few more bars of that. And so on.

In other words, to me it seems disconnected. I don’t sense any kind of momentum building, or that I’m listening to a continuous piece of music.

I fear I’m dangerously close to saying “Doesn’t have a good beat and can’t dance to it.” (cultural reference to Dick Clark’s American Bandstand)

Funny how things converge sometimes. So then today, I see on another forum a discussion of some controversial website owner who fancies himself an expert music critic and apparently hears the cello concerto somewhat like I do.

I do not want my opinion to be linked to this other guy (as is human nature for people to do so) but I’m posting this anyway to give an honest report of my Elgar Cello Concerto listening experiences to my CM friends here. Maybe I just need to listen better? :hide:

The first movement is somewhat unusual since it is ternary form and I am not sure if the cadences are very strong between sections which would make it outside of simple ternary form but the middle section is in E Major so I am not sure about it. I guess it is simple ternary. Someone correct me if I am wrong.
The ternary form lends itself to a disconnected type structure compared to sonata format.

Your comments are quite coherent so there is nothing to be defensive about. You don't like it and provided clear reasons for your subjective preference. I would say it survives because of its very sweet lyricism and the fact that there are relatively few viable solo vehicles for virtuoso cellists.
