Only have these two volumes. Apparently, there's been five or six so far. Čechova is a very accomplished young (?) pianist who plays these lyrical pieces sometimes too lyrically and with too light a touch. I would love to hear Weissenberg perform these works and would definitely opt for more "pastoral" covers in the reissue series.

Those are indeed excellent interpretations. Highly recommended!

I'm not a fan of Belshazzar's Feast. The only copy I own came in the Decca Sound box, conducted by Andrew Litton.

My favorite Walton recording is the Cello Concerto performed by Piatigorsky from the RCA Living Stereo box

The only Smetana piano music I have is performed by Kathryn Stott. I bought it on a whim when I saw it on sale. It's very pleasant music. It doesn't look like there's any overlap with the two you posted.

That very different perspective is probably exactly what I need. Thanks for the heads up. :tiphat:

That is one hell of an album. I love his Brahms double with Heifetz too. :righton:

I am listening to a CD of Smetana's Music by Novotny now on Spotify (Piano Works - A Selection) and I can't say I am very impressed. Might be I just don't like the music.

As a wind band conductor (public school band director), I am very familiar with Holst...his two suites for military band, and RVW Folk Song Suite are like the Old Testament for us. Check out his "Hammersmith," a lesser known work but quite interesting. Fennell recorded it with the Eastman Wind Ensemble.

Gielen is a fine Mahler conductor!

Handel composed an oratorio/opera titled Belshazzar. Not sure if there is any connection between these two works ...

It is probably the oldest recording as well. That was the first set of BSQ I bought ...

I haven't seen any of these (granted, I haven't been out looking for them either)…I assume it's a reissue label, and therefore moderately priced. Are the sonics good?…if so, I need to start snapping these up. Every one of my DG "Musikfest" reissues sound fabulous.

Quartetto Italiano. Seriously, look up the Philips CDs. They own this music.

There's lots of Smetana I've enjoyed, but I'll confess that his solo piano music, or at least what I've heard of it, has yet to do a lot for me. So it could well be the music, not the performance, that isn't "clicking" with you.

A clean copy of the 1952 LP blows away any CD.

I meant the CD. I should have been a tad more specific. Apologies.
