Haven't listened to any recording by Giulini in many moons, now playing the following CD from my Rossini collection for a second listen ...

I finished Igor Levit's new Bach Partitas set this morning--wow. There is some truly magical playing on this recording.

Just a simple one-click checkout should require no further hesitation. Being a member of CMC can drain your wallet ...:righton:

I've had that in my collection as an EMI Studio recording for decades. It's a real favorite.

There was an an LP of Rossini overtures on London Phase 4. That was one of the first five classical albums I ever bought.

Edit - I may have confused the Rossini LP with an album of Strauss waltzes. Both were early purchases, but the Phase 4 may have been the Strauss.

Now playing the following CD from my Albinoni collection. While not HIP, the performance was quite good with excellent Philips sound ...

Now playing the following CD from my Mendelssohn collection. BTW, William Boughton is now the conductor of the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, which is only forty minutes from my house ...

    Seconded!

I assume that the entire contents are in here: [IMG]

and in the complete set that was reissued: [IMG]

If so, I no longer need the former.

You don't need the former anymore. The box is complete.

Yes - it's all in the mega-box (as well as the Brahms box set I discovered). I am trying to think of people who would appreciate one or both as a gift.

I appreciate it but I'm avoiding the box sets at this time. I'll let my taste in classical go organic. My friend been bugging me forever to pick up this Planets releases: http://www.elusivedisc.com/Holst-The-Planets-XRCD24/productinfo/JVCSXR0228/. Hope it is worth it..... :) (yes, I ordered it today).

Giving classical CDs away is probably the best option. I have hundreds in my sale pile (many duplicates/overlaps) and have been trying to sell them for ridicously low prices, but no one seems to be even remotely interested...

I just finished listening to Stokowski conducting Falla's El Amor Brujo and
Wagner's Tristan und Isolde Love Music from The Columbia Stereo Recordings boxed set. It's a wonderful sounding album.

One thing I like about that box is it does have quite a few works that are not the usual suspects.

People criticize the Mozart piano sonatas for being too simple, but I love them.

This is a wonderful SACD--DaCapo always provides superb sound. The Symphony No.1 sounds a lot like a darker, angrier Sibelius; the 8th is more fragmented and chamber music-like.

While I prefer piano works by Beethoven, Brahms, Liszt, Busoni, et al, Mozart has his charms. I understand than many of his Sonatas are a lot harder to play than they sound.
