I'd have to compare to Walter (my other favorite Pastoral), but Bohm sure has him beat for sound.

Believe or not, this twofer LP set that has been in my collection for close to 30 years and I just completed listening to LP1 for a second time. Instead of popping a CD into a CD tray, I have to put LP on the turntable platter 4 times ...

The performance was decent, though I will not bother to buy a CD version just for the sake of cleaner sound.

I have a set of German 78 pressings with Polydor labels, imported by the Gramophone Shop in NYC, of Mahler's Kindertotenlieder sung by Rehkemper and conducted by Horenstein. Side one contains the first song, which runs about 5:40 and is cut very close to a small label. My 1229 not only plays the whole side, it even triggers the automatic return exactly as it should. Couldn't dial it in any better if I tried!

This is a fantastic collection of three very powerful British piano sonatas: Sonata by Frank Bridge, Sonata by Constant Lambert, and Sonata No.2 by Franz Reizenstein, played respectively by Paul Jacobs, John McCabe, and Martin Phillips. The sound is great too--a shame that Continuum Records is no longer in business.

(Sorry about the tiny image--it's the only one I could find.)

I have that same set, but my copy is on Vox (and hence possibly a dub rather than from original masters). I've never played it--maybe this would be a good excuse to get it out and give it a try.

The 1229 was what I lusted after in my heart when I bought the 1218. The 1229 has a bigger platter and longer arm, as I recall it, and also a built-in speed monitor system. There were always several Duals of various 12xx model number at Recycled Stereo (used eqpt. annex of the local store in the old Pacific Stereo chain, and one of my favorite haunts at the time), where I bought my 1218, but the 1218 fell into the category of "no way I can afford this on an impoverished college student's budget," meaning I just ignored prudence and bought it anhow, while the 1229s were in the category of "doesn't matter if I can afford it or not--I just don't have that much money." By the time "that much money" was available, time and I had both moved on, and 1229s were no longer regular fixtures on the used eqpt. landscape.

Back to Rehkemper, here's what Larry Holdridge had to say about him in last year's auction catalogue:

Schwerte, 1894-Munich, 1949. After working for a period
as a machinist, Rehkemper studied singing in
Hagen, Düsseldorf and finally Munich. His debut
was in Colberg, 1919, and then he sang for a
period as a leading baritone at Stuttgart. From
1925 he was with the Munich Staatsoper, where
he achieved great popularity and musical success.
He was equally at home on the concert stage
and was considered one of the great lieder interpreters
of his era. During World War II, in
addition to singing, Rehkemper taught at the
    Mozarteum in Salzburg.

This was a real early Telefunken stereo recording and somehow my Grado cartridge does not seem to track the grooves all that well. The LP jacket specifies a particular type of stylus, which is probably not the type that came with my Grado Prestige Gold. Unfortunately, I do not have different types of stylus to muck around. This early stereophonic LP is a royal pain in the you know what ...

I got this recently, still sealed, now opened & played. I also have the companion with 1-3, which was open & needs to be cleaned before I play it.
