I love many things about Stereophile — I ever retain affection for their ancient and fustian rating system — but I've never for one fleeting moment thought that it's a go-to source for “what is hot”!

    Thanks for the link...

This is not a "what's hot" list, unless you 're being sarcastic.
This is their recommended components list that they publish every year since ages and basically looks the same with the previous year plus some minor new additions.

They sure recommend a lot of gear.

It's a good list. I know they spend a lot of time deciding what goes on the list.

Yes, basically everything they've reviewed over the past couple of years.

It's ok. No big deal, though.

How many of their recommends are from advertisers? Stereophile left me ages ago. Now, I just chuckle in their general direction.

For me, Stereophile is audio porn. Sometimes I just like to lust after things I'll never have a shot at obtaining.

Good to see the Pioneer Andrew Jones speakers listed and very favourably reviewed. My first choice had been a pair of Klipsch but since they aren't sold locally it means I have to import them through a broker, which adds $100 or so in fees, and while I could afford the splurge it would have meant weeks between order processing, customs clearance, etcetera, on the other hand the Pioneer I bought were immediately available at Best Buy.

I just love that the Playstation 1 is on this list

  13. I wish they'd take things a step further and recommend "systems". Not that I'd necessarily take their advice, but one thing we all know (or learn thru trial & tribulation) is that component matching is key in HiFi.

It's never really seemed that Stereophile or even the other review rags spend much time discussing how or why certain components would marry well. It'd be nice to see a "Recommended Systems" issue where they broke it down by "If you like this type of sound & have this much budget, here are three systems worth considering and why we think they work well together."

I'm sure this would open all sorts on cans-o-worms, but it would be fun reading.

  15. Not seeing them on their site, though I do see lots of buyer's guides. You have a link?

Wow, back when I was reading Stereophile (I gave up around the beginning of this century) I thought I would never own an A or A+ rated component, but now I do (A+: PS Audio DirectStream DAC).

It's often on the back page or two of the Editor's Choice issue. It may be reprinted in one of the buyer's guides but I don't recall the specific issue.

Audio Magazin recommends a fitting amp for each speaker reviewed BUT it is in german..lol
Stereophile sure recommends a lot of gear but at the same time even more gear is left out BUT that is normal with so many brands. They have their favorites, like everybody

I don't really care about the recommended components list, or even about Stereophile, but I'm so glad I have the DirectStream. :D

Yes, I subscribed and read cover to cover during the nineties. Then I realized that the Decware components I had become addicted to were absolutely gobsmacking amazing and they aren't "represented" or even acknowledged by Stereophile or others and I just kept upgrading and tweaking my Decware system and stopped even reading the audio press. User reviews led me to PS Audio which fixed me for the front end with the PWD first, and now the DirectStream.

I have one component in the class A list. A headphone. The Sennheiser HD 600. :D
My Audeze LCD-2 are better. But not listed. The LCD-X is listed instead.

But that's all cool. The Stereophile sub-site InnerFidelity is the place to go for headphone stuff if I need confirmation from others that my stuff is good. Or that it's not.
