    Fold or real mix?

I've seen different oppinions on this.

I'll have to have another listen, but one reason that the mono may have been a fold could be the edit near the end where a chord gets repeated, supposedly a mistake that John liked and so kept. Using the same mix for stereo and mono would mean not having to redo that edit.

I'll check the mixes again later.

(Note: The booted Take 20 does not have the edit)

Good observation on the take 20 difference. Never even noticed that.

I believe it was folded. I'm sure Brennan suggests this too.

Since this is the holy MONO White Album we are discussing, it is possible now that 'fold-downs' will no longer be something universally condemned as something no self-respecting audiophile would ever admit to listening to?

Pretty sure it's a fold down, though I think that there was another dedicated mono version floating around out there.

Here's an early version in mono. I'm not hearing any Yoko in here. . .

It's a fold, John Lennon did the mixing (hear the static in the ping-pong crossfades?), the first time he liked stereo.

Wasn't the released Rev 1 based on take 20? You can hear the beginning of the wacky take 20 coda on the released album version if you crank up the fade out on the mono (notably John's warbly "all riiiiiight" during the fade out.

Way back when I first closely studied the mono white album on headphones (1982-3) I concluded that nearly all the Lennon tracks were most likely fold downs. Yer Blues is a notable exception.

As long as Revolution (fast version) isnt a fold down, Im ok.

Other notable exceptions: "Happiness Is A Warm Gun", "Dear Prudence", "Bungalow Bill", "I'm So Tired", "Julia" :D
I'm not sure about "Sexy Sadie" and "Cry Baby Cry" – it could be just very different EQ. To me "Good Night" also sounds like a fold-down, but I haven't checked mixing dates.
Anyway, you're on to something there.

EDIT: I'm not so sure about "Happiness" being dedicated anymore.

Well, the stereo mix was made a year after the mono, so you should be ok ;)

But, but, Paul said that the stereo mixes were only done to sell more product...

Happiness and Sadie are not folds. Sadie - tambourine enters later on mono and bass mistakenly fades up late after vocal. Happiness - stereo has early fade up on vocal before "I need a fix..." revealing tale end of unused vocal.

"Good Night" is definitely not a fold, it doesn't fade up from near-silence like the stereo mix.

"Happiness" has many significant differences in the mono mix---the 'I need a fix' section itself sounds very different--top end rolled off, wonky guitar tone, and the final 'bang bang shoot shoot' section has a keyboard part that is buried in the stereo mix.

I wish we had a version of the mammoth take 20 with the cutting lead guitar that "Revolution 1" contains. FOr some reason, the long take does not include those overdubs.

Of course, no discussion of the mono White Album is complete without someone sarcastically suggesting that it is ritually impure because a couple of tracks are fold-downs. Makes little sense as it's two tracks on a double LP. Lots of great true mono to be had on the WA.

As a general rule, genuine mono mixes are preferable to fold-downs, but no one has ever self-immolated from listening to a fold down.

Happiness is a dedicated mix. Listen to the way the "i need a fix" backing vocals builds up. The stereo doesn't have that.

    Sarcasm, perhaps.

    Ritual impurity, perhaps not.
