Have you heard Natan Brand's Pictures on APR CD? The release (unfortunately OOP) is a 2CD set called Natan Brand In Recital. I had become convinced that I didn't like the work after hearing many of the great piano recordings of it, including Horowitz and my favorite pianist, Richter. But Natan Brand (sadly, no longer with us and left behind only 3 CD releases) made me really love this work. His performance is not to be missed!

Does that mean that there won't be any Lang Lang on the album?

He wasn't a handsome man, so perhaps wrongheaded isn't out of place here.

Now playing CD1 from the following twofer from my JS Bach collection. As I am a purist, only piano performances of JS Bach keyboard works can coexist with the intended harpsichord performances in my collection. I do believe had piano been invented at JS Bach's lifetime, he would have composed those works for piano.

That's indeed a fine recording. I love his disc of Bach English Suites and the Ravel/Prokofiev recording. Sadly, due to various traumatic events and ensuing psychological issues in his life, his interpretations and playing have deteriorated to an alarming degree in the past 10 years or so. I'm glad I saw him in his heyday...twice. He played the most electrifying Rachmaninoff Sonata No.2 (original version, not the "simplified" one) I have ever heard, with Balakirev's "Islamey" for an encore. I'll never forget that evening.

I don't have the Chopin, but I do like the Rachmaninoff Sonata/Preludes disc. His Bartok Piano Concerto No. 1 and 2 is spectacular, too.

and he plays magnificently in the Sonata No.1 and 2 for Violin and Piano:

    (This has demonstration-worthy sound, too.)

This is really an excellent recording IMO. With every re-listen, I have gotten more appreciative of how well Maria Joao Pires performed in this recording for someone who is not generally known for her Bach ... :righton:

More fine Christa Ludwig, issued in 1966. Despite the sticker this plays without problems & is very quiet. A good-sounding record, pressed by Capitol at their Scranton plant.

It is not easy to find an Angel LP that does not have serious surface noise ...

This one is proof they do exist. Maybe 1966 was a good year.

A quiet sendoff into this good night: Tchaikowsky's celebrated Andante Cantabile played by the Budapest Qtt. (Roismann, Schneider, Ipolyi, Schneider), issued as a single Victor 78 as part of the company's rather short-lived experiment in issuing older Red Seal material at a reduced price on black label. I've had the record since 1995, but I'm not sure that I've ever played it before--if so, the last time was probably right after I got it. Nice, quiet surfaces and meltingly beautiful playing. Good night, all! :tiphat:

Before we completely leave classical guitar behind....this is my all time favorite classical guitar record

    http://www.amazon.com/Vincenzo-Macaluso-String-Interprets-Classics/dp/B0042Z8CMM
This LP might be my number one choice for best sound of any recording of any kind. The music and the playing are superb as well. Just an amazingly beautiful thing to listen to. That 10 string guitar is so easy on the ears.
