I have this, but on 45's...need to dig it out of the basement and give it a listen.

So I got this at a thrift for $1…10 LPs, pressed by RCA (yes, Dynagroove LPs, but they sound fantastic). A lot of good light classical literature on here that is well executed, which is mostly why I got it (and the fact that they looked virtually unplayed and I'm a sucker for LPs).

Arrau playing Bach: nothing more needs to be said. One does have a make allowances for the 1942/45 sound quality, but it's really not that bad--it reasonably reproduces the sound of a piano. In fact, it's nice to know that the performances haven't been micro-edited and processed like so many recordings today. I'm sure more modern remastering techniques than those used in 1988 would result in better sound, but it's good enough to hear the genius and soul of Arrau's playing.

Now listening to "D. Scarlatti - Sonatas Vol. 1" from the "Andreas Staier Edition" box set on DHM.

The first track sounds like he's a Scarlatti machine.

...and it has probably my favorite record jacket cover ever. (It's even better in the larger 78 RPM format.)

This is all the sort of thing that Fiedler did better than anybody else, before or since. Well done, say I! :edthumbs:

This box is in my Beethoven collection but is not my goto set since I still prefer Beethoven Symphonies to be performed on modern instruments ...

In my Brahms class we were listening to the Brahms 3rd, and I recalled that Carlos Santana and Dave Matthews borrowed the third movement.

    St. Matthew Passion:

" . . . The tune is based on a melody line from a chorale from Johann Sebastian Bach's St Matthew Passion, itself a reworking of an earlier secular song, "Mein G'müt ist mir verwirret," composed by Hans Leo Hassler.[2] The melody used for "American Tune" can be heard quite distinctly in part 1, number 21 and number 23 and in part 2, number 54. "American Tune"'s melody is practically identical to that of "Mein G'müt ist mir verwirret" and "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded", although Simon expanded on the tune. Credit to the origins of the melody is given on his album cover. . ."

Do you like the way he does Symphony No. 5? I liked the version in my set. Much slower than the Gardiner version.

I believe this is the set that I had at one time, and now wished I had kept it. Isn't this the set that has a stereo Sleigh Ride (composed by Leroy Anderson)? It is one of Fiedler's finest bits in my opinion. The timing is fabulous and the trumpet players are fantastic. And RCA did a great job in the transfers for Reader's Digest as they did on several of the Digest compilations. Gotta find that again for the holidays.

Of the 2 recordings of the 5th Klemperer made for EMI (1955 and 1959) I prefer the one from 1955. It sounds livelier and more vital.

Thanks for the correction, I thought about SMP. As I have not followd any non-classical music since the early 80's and was too lazy to google, I just pointed out what one of my sisters who told me about the Paul Simon piece from years ago ...
