I thought it was a rather patronizing comment.

Robin, notice that the Fagius set on BIS can only be played on sacd players (it's not surround though, stereo only). It has 5 discs only, but contains 20 hours of music (each disc is +4 hours).
For the performance, money and excellent sonics, you can't go wrong with it, as it's a steal!

The Walcha box set is great, but is not as complete as the Fagius set. The recordings are very good considering some are from the mid-50's, and though there are a few sonic limitations here and there, there's nothing distracting at all. Performances are great.

The Preston box is also very good, but in my opinion, and as oposite to the other box sets, there are better performances of some of the pieces contained.

The Hänssler may be the most complete of them, but I only have a few separate discs. Great sound and performances too.

I'd go for the Fagius set if you have a sacd player, as it has the best sound of all and the performances are brilliant

Why, I don't mind if I do. Have three [count 'em] bottom-end SACD players from 2004, all work.

This is a good set if one requires surround sound:

These are historically informed performances--I prefer mine on massive cathedral organs with 32' pipes! How big is Fagius' organ? (no jokes, please...) :D

And does it have any stops?

    How much is this set?

Yes, it has stops, which varies according to the organ being used--there are quite a few.

    Here is some more info:
    http://www.aeolus-music.com/ae-en/All-Discs/AE10761-Bach-Johann-Sebastian-Complete-Organ-Works

My wife got it for me as a birthday present last year--I think it was around $160. She got it from some little organ store in Texas, but I don't see them coming up in a Google search.

EDIT: Here it is, but they don't list it now: http://pipe-organ-recordings.com/

I guess I've been on a Zarathustra mission lately, as this is my 3rd purchase of the piece in two weeks, and what a glorious, intense performance. Excellent sound, too (the organ and bells are a bit more impressive in Previn's Telarc recording). Overall, this might be my favorite.[IMG]

Not for "German school" purists, however; he likes very bright registrations and as a rule does not linger. Amazon has it here: http://www.amazon.com/Bach-Organ-Complete-Michel-Chapuis/dp/B00004RJSX for $75

A brief favorable review of the performances, with links to info about the performer, is here: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/culture/damianthompson/100006883/bachs-organ-music-revealed-at-last/

Oh, and the set first saw light of day on LP, well before the advent of CD; Bach works discovered since then will be conspicuous by their absence.

    A day of Beethoven's 9th for me:

    - Furtwangler (Berlin, 1942)
    - Furtwangler (Lucerne, 1954)
    - Fricsay (BPO, 1958)
    - Karajan (BPO, 1963)

I'm still not sure which one I prefer.
