Is the remaster sounds better?

I also have a CD of Charles Dutoit & the OSM featuring Carlos Bonell which I also like very much. Is there a preferred version for anyone here?

 

To my ears the remastered Warner Classics CD-set does sound better than the 3 complete EMI CD-sets from the late 1980s, but opinions seem to vary. If you have the older (EMI) sets there's no need to replace them, though.

 

Mine too. I listened to it tonight. A lovely recording, but I would not be surprised to find out that better recordings of this work exist.

 

A decent performance with some excellent dynamics to boot. My thirty-year old Tandberg amplifier continues to deliver ...

 

Now playing the following SACD from my Rachmaninov collection for a third listen ...

 

No. 30-32 today. I know some people think his tempos are too slow, but I think they add depth and majesty to the music. I can't get over how good these 50 year old recordings sound. No doubt the original analog tape and tube mics helped.

 

I think this is one of the best performances of the pieces that I've heard. I got to hear these same forces play the 3rd Concerto a few years ago--it was electrifying!

 

Does it say that they used tube mics in the notes or was that the norm back then?

 

That was the norm. Neumann first developed a solid state mic in 1964, the same year as the most recent recording in the set, but I seriously doubt that Philips jumped at the chance to use it!

IMO, Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini: Andante Cantabile and the Prelude to Parsifal are two of the most romantic pieces of classical music ever composed ...

Now on the turntable, Sides 1 & 2 from "Bach - The Well-Tempered Clavier I" performed by Daniel Chorzempa playing harpsichord/clavichord/organ on Philips.

 

How do you find the switching back and forth between instruments?

 

It doesn't bother me. And, I enjoy the variety of sounds.

 

Wonderful version-well-played colorful sound. I have this on CD as part of the Reiner box set and an older vinyl reissue for Alto( manufactured by Classic, I think) for European market-a black sticker was used on front top of cover to hide RCA logos/marks. I bought a batch of the stealth RCA LPs at low price.

 

Now listening to "Bach - Partita No. 2 BWV 1004/Sonata No. 3 BWV 1005" performed by Lara St. John on Well Tempered Productions.

This came out 18 years ago. Time goes by too fast.
