That box is already available in Europe. I'm thinking of getting it some time next year, even though I already have quite a few of her Decca recordings. The new big Monteux box is my first priority, though, and there's also a Sviatoslav Richter box coming in January :)

An hour or so ago: Beethoven: Violin Concerto, Op.61 - Jascha Heifetz with Charles Munch/Boston Symphony Orchestra - RCA hybrid SACD, CD-layer. A 1955 Lewis Layton recording that sounded a tad boxier than I remembered. The producer was John Pfeiffer.

A technically masterful interpretation, as usual from Heifetz; yet it sounded a bit uninvolved, cold even, as so often with Heifetz, at least to my ears.

The cheapest price for the one with the Bluray (the Super Deluxe) is $220 + ship. And yes, the aound on the Bluray is enough better to justify getting it (I'm extrapolating from the Esoeric SACD's, which in fact were made from a slightly older transfer done at 24/44.1 but still sound better than the new CD's. The BD is 24/48 with the same mastering as the CD's).

I'm a bit biased since I was just listening to it this morning, but I really like Eugen Jochum's version with the London Phil from the 1970's. Overall, I think this Jochum-Brahms cycle is excellent, and it is one of my favorites to listen to.

Nothing at all. It's great. I do think the 2nd symphony is the highlight of that cycle though, not so much no. 3.

OK - I'm confused. The link is to an unreleased Blu-Ray that goes for $81.

I'm assuming it's simply the Bluray Audio disc from the Deluxe Edition (which is why I was comparing those prices; if you can play the BD the CD's seem superfluous), but I suppose I could be wrong. It would be bizarre if it were different, though.

Now: Beethoven: Piano Sonatas 13-14, Op.27/1-2; 15, Op.28 - Claudio Arrau - 11 CDs, Philips (the 1991 CD box with the 1960s cycle)

Amazon reviews indicate that both the Blu-Ray and the CDs in the megabox come from 1997 mastering.

This disc arrived today: a wondrous performance of the Mozart with excellent sound--I prefer it on both accounts to the Perlman/Zukerman. Haven't listen to the Brahms yet.

Just listened to it. And through headphones the orchestra sounds wonderful (if a bit distant), and the recording quality does not suffer from digititis. I have been very disappointed with the sound of many of the more recent recordings in the box.

As for the performance, it is on the warm side. The second and third movements were lovely. The first movement seemed a bit under-powered. But I was pumping to the fortissimos in the last movement. So overall an A-/B+ in my opinion.

Yes, that transfer was at 24/48 according to several articles and interviews, but the new set had further (re)mastering compared to the 1997 release. In any case, my point regarding pricing and sound quality remains. Apparently the master analog tape had deteriorated too much to make a new transfer.

Yes, I won't argue with that, it's a good big-band traditional Brahms captured in very good modern sound. I think that Abbado's approach works best in the first two symphonies. Still I prefer the athleticism of Karajan, or the depth of the late Giulini on DG.

How can they further remaster the recording if the original tapes are gone?

I'm fond of Sir Adrian Boult's account that I have on EMI; if forced to choose only one, I expect that's the one I'd take. Frederick Stock recorded the piece with the CSO during the 78 era, and I need to get better acquainted with that set, but alas it is sonically (NOT artistically) rather dull, a product of Columbia when Columbia records tended to the murky by comparison with their Victor counterparts.

You are really asking that question at the SH Forums?? The place where we dissect every mixing, mastering and other production maneuver to death?

Mastering is a process performed on any recording, involving among other possibilities compression, equalization, peak-limiting, bandwidth limiting, etc. It is distinct from mixing and A>D transfer.
