I am not enamored of the opera other than the music as the opera singers all dressed in modern costume, which IMO has taken away 50% of the joy of watching an opera ... :sigh:

I have no need for any piano recordings by the latest hot shot pianists once I am done with bulking up my Richter collection ... :agree::righton:

Does anyone know anything about the following Richter's SACD recording?

By the way, I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, but on March 18, Universal is releasing (Japan only) several cds from Sviatoslav Richter (recordings from Deutsche Grammophon, Decca and Philips, from the late fifties till early nineties), which include some out of print recordings (at least individually).:righton:

Since the recent complete box set could contain several cds already in the collection, it's a nice gesture to avoid duplications.

The cds will be priced 1200yen (10,13$).

    No artwork available yet, though.

With short hair, wearing pants, suspenders etc. and the cover art of the DVD twofer is pretty misleading ... LOL

The singing was decent and Concerto Copenhagen put in a virtuosic performance. The performance was recorded live at the Royal Danish Opera - a pretty impressive venue to comemorate the 250th anniversary of the death of GF Handel ...

So far, the eighty something concert pianist was quite impressive ...

I hear you. I expected to see a valkyrie in the Handel high baroque style but was sorely disappointed. IMO, watching the singers in those fancy traditional costume is part of the fun of watching an opera ...

Just have to say that listening to this LP is pure joy. Lili Krauss, Mozart Concertos #12 in A Major, #18 in Bb Major, Boston Symphony/Munch.

Funny, I did order the Complete Decca/Philips/DG box, even though I already have the Complete Decca/Philips/DG solo box. Couldn't resist... I also ordered the latest version of Claudio Arrau's Complete 1960s Beethoven Piano Sonatas set, even though I have the older release, just because the current box is the only one with Arrau's 1952 recording of the Diabelli Variations.

Did you get her recent CD box on Erato, Todd? It's wonderful!

How's the sound on the Lili Kraus box? Some say the later recordings sound too shrill/bright.

It has the best sound I have heard for the earlier recordings. I didn't notice anything wrong with the later ones, but then I don't have anything to compare them to. Keep in mind, some of the earlier recordings are from the 78 era.

    Thanks.

Yeah, I know. The set covers the years 1933-1958.

No I did not, but I need to check it out...if this LP is any indication (the only recording I currently have of hers), I'm in for a real treat.

I have (and love) Abbado's Verdi Requiem on DG.

This is just a stunning disc, from the music, the playing, and the sound. I've never heard of Schwarz-Schilling, so now I'm eager to hear more of his music as well as the original String Quartet version of the piece on this disc. It's very powerful--densely contrapuntal.

Oh, it's one for the ages. I'm still partial to the Solti/CSO, partly because Bud Herseth was my idol, and I grew up with that recording as THE shining example of orchestral brass playing. Those guys could haul it.

For intensity, I love Fricsay's white hot performance on DG.
