gregorya I approve of this message

I remember seeing the credits on a Monkees album when I was a kid, they read:

Drums: Mickey Dolenz, "Fast" Eddie Hoh... I took it to mean that Mickey played the drums and Eddie played the fast bits... Didn't realize it was a nickname... ;)

Very happy to hear he's doing well... I studied all of his Monkees drum parts as a young drummer.

Would it be too much to ask if he did the same for me?

Cwitt1980, Eddie says to thank you for your offer of a radio interview, but he would like to respectfully decline. I think he's just a shy guy and doesn't want to record his voice on anything. After all, did you ever see him sing? Perhaps one day we can persuade him into a magazine interview, anyway. I think he would be happy to autograph anything for you, as well. Again, I'll see about setting up a P.O. box for him for people to send items to.

As for me, after we checked out the forum, by the way he had a great time seeing all the stuff on the internet about himself, we started looking through pictures on google. He spotted the back of the album, Michael Bloomfield Al Kooper Stephen Stills Al Kooper & Stephen Stills "Super Session". He said, "Hey! That's Super Session. Great album!!" He pointed everybody out on it, including himself, and asked me if I heard it. I had to admit that I hadn't, and he told me I need to. So I ordered a copy on Amazon, right there with him, and asked him if when it comes, he'll autograph it for me. He said, "Of Course I will!!"

One more thing this evening, he carefully read his Widipedia and verified everything as correct. Items that are a mystery including his birthday, he said can remain a mystery. He likes being a little mysterious! No, he wouldn't even tell me his birthday. He DID tell me his favorite group to play with, and that was the guys from The Modern Folk Quartet.

Next week, I plan to show him facebook and see if I can set up a fan page!

    Until then...

Great to see that Eddie Hoh is alive and well and that Monterey Pop clip is incredible---is that from an expanded release?

Chip TRG, Sorry, I was tired last night and forgot one other bit of info I wanted to mention to you about the video. The grin you pointed out at :48 seconds... I pointed to him on the screen and said, "Look at Mr Eddie Hoh enjoying his riff!" and sitting there next to me, was the exact same grin, as the one in the video. He enjoyed it all over again!! Seriously brought a tear to my eye!!

Kendude, I'm also a huge Eddie Hoh fan. If you're meeting again with him soon, I have two questions I've always wanted to ask him if I had the chance. Primarily I was always curious what his impressions were of Phil Spector (who recorded Eddie's band the Modern Folk Quartet back in 1965). Also, I'd be grateful if he can share any insight regarding his studio sessions with Mike Nesmith that occurred after the Pisces album (songs such as "Writing Wrongs" and "Tapioca Tundra" for instance). His playing there is simply phenomenal.

Thanks again for taking the time to share your interactions with us! I'm really happy to hear that Eddie is alive and well and in good spirits these days.

    I did the same thing.

The silly thing is that, in the mystery over who drummed on "Door into Summer", I think it's (at least mostly) Eddie, because the playing of the kick drum, especially, during the fade, is too (wait for it) fast for Dolenz.

I always thought that Micky drums throughout the entire track, with Eddie joining in starting on the second verse.

Quite possible, but the extra drum track on the second verse seems to be mostly snare hits and crashes, and the fancy footwork seems to happen on the other track.

If it is Dolenz, it's some of the best playing he ever did. Maybe we'll find out once and for all in 2017 when the deluxe "Pisces" box has a sessions disc.

Well, that could be! The (only?) thing I've learned through the years is to try not to accept conventional wisdom without checking for factual sources. Maybe Kendude can ask Eddie about this as well?

Eddie's playing has such a nice jazz element to it, quite like John Densmore's, and two 'trademarks' of his stand out to me in particular: he rides the bell of the ride cymbal in a tasteful way (the 'Straight Shooter' clip from Monterey, for example) and his bass drum pedal work is wonderful - dig what he lays down after the break in 'Salesman'. Wow!

On the stereo version, the main drum part is on the left and the right is overdubbed drums. I'll assume left is Eddie and the right is Micky but who knows.

Cool, thank you very much! However, I'm a little wary of mailing it since it already has the signatures of Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Peter Tork, Andrew Sandoval, Henry Diltz, Dave Evans, Bill Chadwick, Chip Douglas and David Pearl. I'd hate to lose it...

    Kendude,
As far as I'm concerned, I think you deserve an MVP award for getting Eddie to start talking to people again and getting the music community involved with him too. Please pass along to him that I hope life is treating him well and that I appreciate all of the work he's done over the years.

I wonder if he's heard the remix of "Tapioca Tundra" from the BBM box set, with the double drum parts. I love it:

Jason and Bad Jack. Eddie can probably solve your question once and for all. Please though, no bad mouthing his buddy Mickey. They were really tight back in the day, and Eddie doesn't like trash talking Mickey. But Eddie should remember who's track is where.

Mark The Shark. I totally understand your concern. And I can understand more, your wish to have Eddie ' s autograph on that album. Tell me how you would like to handle doing this. Maybe we can UPS it back and forth. One thing you need to understand is, Eddie is very private. He loves hearing from you all, answering questions and is even happy to sign autographs, but he won't be happy if I were to start bringing a bunch of strangers to his house. Do you want to leave me your email, maybe?

Shepherdfan. Thank you very much. I was just put in the right place at the right time. Eddie is so happy to hear from everybody and I'll be sure to show him your message when I visit him this week. He loves seeing his weekly "fan mail"!! Moreover, I love seeing him smile. Eddie is quite well, just so you know. He was just over worked and underpaid as a session drummer, so he retired from the business, not realizing how many people recognized his talent!

MarkTheShark, I have an idea. I'll be in Addison IL on Friday night, perhaps we can meet so I can get your album signed, over the weekend. I was thinking I can ask Eddie if I can snap a picture of him signing it for you, at least so you have some evidence. Let me know how to get a hold of you personally, if this sounds like a good plan. Maybe one day we can get Eddie out to a club for people to meet him; right now he says he doesn't care to hang out in clubs anymore.

Wouldn't dream of it. I think that what did Dolenz did as a drummer in such a short learning period was pretty remarkable, and in my alternate universe, he would've remained a drummer after the Monkees ended. Still, just in terms of style and ability, the stuff I'm referring to sounds more like Eddie. I'd love to be wrong.

That's great. I love the Modern Folk Quartet. Is that him on "I Had a Dream Last Night" and "Nighttime Girl."? I'm assuming it is. Sounds his style. I'm hoping one day these sessions they had with a full band get released. I think they were only singles. I'd love to have them all on a compilation (they're really hard to find).
