Their last concert. A new era began then. SFF/Penny Lane was first release.

    I would amend this thusly:

A - PPM to Beatles For Sale (The Boy Band Albums)

B - Help, Rubber Soul, Revolver (The Folk-Rock Albums)

C - Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine (The Psychedelic Albums)

D - White Album, Let It Be, Abbey Road (The Solo Albums)

    A - PPM to A Hard Day's Night (amphetamins)

B - For Sale to Rubber Soul (marihuana)

C - Revolver, Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine (LSD)

D - White Album, Let It Be, Abbey Road (heroin)

(not exactly serious, but in case of John Lennon it roughly fits)

  4. The Rain/Paperback Writer single, which, I believe was released before the Revolver album.

Since we're getting silly, I propose:

    A - PPM to A Hard Day's Night --- Tight trousers
    B - Help, Rubber Soul, Revolver --- Relaxed-fit jeans
C - Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, Yellow Submarine --- Tie-dyed pajama bottoms
D - White Album, Let It Be, Abbey Road --- Ripped-up, dirty bell bottoms

    ;)

For me the dividing line for music would be the single "Paperback Writer/Rain". Although there was also another line before "Help".

But there is also another dividing line in their career. Today you only meet male Beatles fans with huge collections and everything. I don't know any woman with a Beatles collection.
But watching old concerts the Beatles seemed only seemed to have girls as fans. So when did that change set in?

I cannot lump Rubber Soul and Revolver with the earlier albums nor can I group then with Sgt. Pepper and beyond albums so I guess for me those are the transition point between early and late period Beatles although we are really only talking about a seven or eight year period in total.

  11. Agree with above!

When I'm 64 was written many years before Pepper, Lady Madonna could have been recorded in in 1963, early BeAtle singles like IWTHYH and SHe Loves You are musically complex, The White Album is the clincher, as it spans the history of Rock on two vinyl discs - early- mid -late - whatever - Beatle Music was always evolving forward, reaching back and transforming it all.

As a wise man once said : "I go back so far- I'm in front of me."

  12. Not to overemphasize drugs among all the other factors influencing their growth and evolution (and in some respects, regression), but this nails it exactly...

    Moustaches :D

Seriously though..Those late 1966 interviews outside Abbey Road studios are the defining point for me.
They almost look like a completely different band.

Yeah the moustaches and the long hair pretty much define late Beatles for me.

This is exactly how I break it down, four separate phases, made easier because it is broken up by years: 1963-64; 1965-66; 1967; 1968-1970.

  19. Dr. Pepper

    Dr. Pepper What, me worry?

Interesting post! I think there is a two-fold answer to this. First The Beatles were always popular with boys, but girls were such rabid fans that they would camp out and snag most all of the concert tickets. It also became apparent very quickly that a guy at a beatles concert was not a cool thing. Like a guy going to a New Kids On The Block concert.

Second I think girls started jumping off the band wagon in droves and guys started jumping on in equal fashion when the Beatles entered their second phase around the Revolver era. I think since that time a re-evaluation of the mop top era albums has happened by male music fans much like Paul's Ram has gained in stature after it's initial release.

I don't care if they had mustaches or not. I agree with those who say it changed when the touring stopped.

Perhaps it would be more accurate to say the early era decreases as the cannabis increases - an inversely proportional relationship.

Revolver and Pepper. With the red and blue comps I think they did it perfectly.
