This is exactly what I'll need after a forthcoming move with the fiancee, a secondary system that will work for social gatherings, dinner music etc. Something modest but musical. I imagine those Pioneer speakers, which are said to punch well above their weight, do the job nicely…..

Tom, since you're local, you're welcome to come over and check them out any time you like. For such a modest little rig, it is surprisingly satisfactory.

Those Pioneer Andrew Jones speakers are pretty remarkable. In fact, I have a pair of the upgraded SP-BS-22LR speakers not being used currently, which I'm willing to sell...

Love your Pioneer SX 780 what a beauty

My wife was opposed to a lot of "ugly" electronics cluttering up our austerely furnished living room, so this is the compromise solution we settled on.

Being placed in a corner alcove helps with projection and bass weight (although those little Pioneers have inherently good bass for their size). Even though the room is large and open, this system does a good JOB[IMG] of filling the space, although audiophile considerations like imaging, etc. are a non-starter. That's OK, this is not where I do my critical listening. It does its intended job well: providing some background music with quality sound.

Having an automatic turntable is really handy; I don't have to worry about lifting the arm at the end of a side if I'm distracted elsewhere in the house. I also have a tall stacking spindle, for convenience during dinner parties, etc.

    • Turntable: Dual 1219, expertly serviced by AudioKarma member "NoTransistors," in rare German Dual base w/ flip-down accessories compartment
    • Cartridge: Shure M97xE
    • CD: TDK dual-well CD recorder that I bought over 10 years ago, and has been remarkably resilient for a cheap BPC unit
    • Receiver: Pioneer SX-780 ($50 on Craig's List)
    • Speakers: Pioneer Andrew Jones SP-BS-21LR ($40 on Craig's List)

Thanks! I've always been fond of the silverface Pioneers. My first ever stereo system, back in the late '70s, was built around a modest SX-450.

When a near mint example in perfect operating condition - even all of the lamps are good - came up for sale on Craig's List for $50, well, it was a no-brainer!

There are so many things that frighten me about this setup, but you're not expecting it to be anything that it isn't, and it probably beats the pants off of any "lifestyle" systems that are out there for a fraction of the money. Nice.

    LOL!

The only real practical concern is the proximity to the wood-burning stove in the fireplace. The turntable is removed during the months when the stove is in use, so that the mechanism doesn't get gunked up with creosote.

    Exactly.

This is where I go when I want to have a serious music-listening session:

That becomes less important as you age. :)

I enjoy both of my systems more than a pretty face.

And I enjoy more things about my wife than her pretty face.

Now, now... it wouldn't be very gentleman-like for me to put my wife on display, would it?

But you can see her here: http://craftcouncil.org/magazine/article/objects-wonder
She and her work are the featured cover story in the current issue of American Craft magazine!

Good choice. Very good. Asian women are, well........good choices.

Tell her I really like her art too. The bird with the colorful balls inside is really pretty.

But you should get an artistic looking system then she will not begrudge.

There are beautiful aspects to women of all kinds. :)

Thank you! Fiber art is a new thing for her... she has been a metalsmith for the past 20 years.

Hmmm, like maybe one of these...?

Lived in Asia for 18 years. I like their feminine style.

Yes, she might approve of this system, and the bonus is she can display her art on the top.

My wife is going on a trip this Saturday. I'm going to take my new Heresy(s) and the Fisher 400 up to the living room to replace the Marantz 2230 and EPI 100's. I'll crank it for a few days then see what she says when she gets back.
