Still the definitive recording of the Concerto as far as I'm concerned. I have the 1990s remaster (cd) and I think it sounds great.

I heard k543 from that set on Dutch radio 4 and I didn't like it one bit. I thought the sound of the orchestra was really terrible, but then I'm not really a fan of period instruments.

Well, I like what I've heard so far - the Finale of K543 is playing now. I've nothing against period-instrument performances (HIP) of the works of Beethoven and his predecessors, with the exception of fortepiano :)

I've liked his work on Debussy and Mahler, but quite simply haven't got a grasp of this one.

Some great after work music. I really love the famous second movement of the "Pathetique" played with forward movement without schmaltz. Also a great "Moonlight" sonata, plus some great playing on maybe LvB's best WoO, the 32 Variations on an Original Theme in C minor.

    "Annie Fischer 1976 - 1978* - Hungaroton
These performances were recorded phrase by phrase with retakes, cutting, pasting, and editing taking place as late as 1992 and even beyond Fischer's death. Has its (cult?) following."

While I prefer Bach's GV on the piano, this new string orchestra recording is certainly wonderful. Spreading Bach's dense musical lines among several groups of players clarifies the counterpoint, and of course, string instruments can sustain the notes longer and add some tasteful vibrato, so this version casts the music in an entirely different light. The Britten Sinfonia plays magnificently. Fantastic sound, too--sounds like it the group was closely mic'd in a very reverberant church, so there's a perfect blend of presence/detail as well as ambience.

I've been tempted by many adaptations of the Goldbergs -- harp, brass, organ, quartet, and so on -- but this one I can't resist. On its way from my fav KY vendor.

Is the above recording pretty similar to the one below?
    Bach Goldberg Variations
Johann Sebastian Bach, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, NES Chamber Orchestra

It was the Goldberg Variations performed on a string orchestra. I bought the CD a good number of years ago but really did not like it much ...

BTW, I have a version of Goldberg Variations performed on organ. All in all, I only enjoy Goldberg Variations performed either on piano or on harpsichord but nothing else ...
