"Sonny Stitt Quartet - Personal Appearance" (1957) with Bobby Timmons, Edgar Willis (bass), Kenny Dennis (drums). (Verve CD 2004)
"Joe Henderson - In Japan" (1971) with Hideo Ichikawa (electric piano), Kunimitsu Inaba (bass), Motohiko Hino (drums). Heard a sample of 'Round Midnight and had to have it. The full 12 minute version is incredible! Blue Bossa, too! (OJC CD 2000)
All his Milestone albums are worth getting! I especially dig Black Is The Color and Black Narcissus! N/P: Stan Getz - Captain Marvel
The Elements is good. I really like the live albums too like the one pictured above. I'm off to Nebraska Monday's for the first time in three or four weeks. I've been busy or tired but tonight I'm ready.
Very much appreciated jiffypopinski! Just found a CD that has Black Is The Color AND In Pursuit Of Blackness (?) on the same CD. Black Narcissus! seems out of print and tricky to locate. But i will!
Yeah, I got the Japanese editions of his Milestone recordings and they all sound great! I believe there is a Milestone box that was released in the 90s domestically. Don't know if it's OOP though.
Oh, to hell with that! Here it is at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Joe-Henderson-The-Milestone-Years/dp/B000000XRM Some dude is selling an almost like new copy for under $50
I just received a Record Store Day numbered copy of Miles Davis' "Miles Ahead". It's mono on the six eye Columbia label. Sounds great! By the way, does anyone know how many of these were issued? The number on mine is 0098. Now I realize that the number on the cover probably has nothing to do with the vinyl inside, but still, kind of cool in my opinion.
You are a Gentleman, Sir! THANK YOU. That's ebay for you. Anyway, done..will post what i think. Thanks again
Earlier Joe Henderson, with the 'studio' Blue Bossa. First Blue Note recordings. Great album. "Joe Henderson - Page One" (1963) with Kenny Dorham, McCoy Tyner, Butch Warren, Pete La Roca. (Blue Note CD 1988)
Barry Harris, BULL'S EYE (originally recorded in 1968 and issued on Prestige, this is the OJC CD reissue). A typically strong Harris date from this period, and unusual in that Charles McPherson is on tenor instead of his more familiar alto. He sounds good, but the stars here for me are the leader, Kenny Dorham, and Pepper Adams. A couple tracks are for trio and are also very enjoyable. Billy Drummond, THE GIFT (recorded in 1993, issued on Criss Cross). I bought this one upon seeing Renee Rosnes was on board - she was married to Drummond at the time - she's a favorite player of mine. This is excellent work, with one of Seamus Blake's best early outings and Rosnes in splendid form. The music is straight ahead but not overly conservative. A good one.
Coincidentally, I just saw the SFJazz Collective at the Reno Jazz Festival this past Saturday, great show. This year they're saluting the music of Joe Henderson, and among several other of his tunes, they played "Fire" from THE ELEMENTS - a smoking (ahem) version, arranged by drummer Obed Calvaire.
Maaaan, I bet that was righteous!!! It's such a powerful recording... I can only imagine what it would sound like live.
