Having revisited the miniseries a few months ago and having read the book decades ago, I just don't see how this is going to be a compelling two movie series.

Didn't know they were remaking this. I've never read the book, always wanted to. But I watched the miniseries when it was new, and recently rewatched it. I was actually impressed with some of the horror/suspense elements in the TV miniseries. They really created some of the scariest moments I've ever seen from that period of TV, and honestly, I'm surprised they got away with some of it considering how conservative things were in 1990. I'm definitely interested in the movie remake.

The TV version scared the hell out of me when I was a kid. It's pretty creepy. I should read the book.

In some ways things were more conservative but in other ways, we're more conservative now.

Man oh man. The book was so pornographic. I was quite guilty of corrupting all my junior high school friends by showing them passages in that. They could NEVER film what was in the book. No way.

I could only see Fox as the major network that would take a chance on it these days. No way CBS, NBC or ABC touch it now. It would wind up on cable though, maybe FX, and be a whole lot more graphic. I always thought the exploding balloons of blood was pushing the envelope for TV.

In the novel, A ClockWork Orange, the original age of the girls that Alex meets in the music store were like 12 or 13.

In fact, I watched a Seinfeld rerun last week. It was the episode entitled The Shoes. In that episode, George and Jerry meet up with an NBC executive because they want to sell their idea as a sitcom. Anyway, the exec's 15 year old daughter arrives and she's wearing a low cut shirt. The executive had gotten sick and had gone to the restroom. The girl leans over to get something. Jerry bumps George so that he can take a look. Jerry goes back to writing something and the executive walks out and notices that George is looking at his daughter. No way would that joke fly today. This is three years after IT. There'd be a media uproar and twitter shamed and all this other bs.

The daughter in that episode was a young Denise Richards, I think...

Yeah, Fox, but I saw that Dracula show that used to be on NBC and it was pretty graphic. CBS has all those crime shows and those have some gruesome things, but definitely not ABC.

Oh yeah, if she had looked more youthful, maybe there would have been some talk. Of course if that happened in real life today, the father would be wanting to put charges on old George, her being 15 and all.

I still think context drives a lot of those images. CBS shows them on crime dramas, and context is along the lines of the nightly news, but would they touch horror these days? NBC might do it, but you're right, no ABC.

I remember in the 80's on HBO they would show a program hosted by Dick Cavett called Remember When. One episode was about sex throughout the 20th Century and that one had nudity and they would show it on the daytime. Same thing with movies every now and again in the daytime they would show an R rated movie. They would show Excalibur with all the violence and nudity. They showed Pretty Baby with Brooke Shields too in the daytime.

There are a lot of King stories that nobody has ever made a movie of. I wish some of those would get made, rather than a re-do of "It". I'd really like to see "The Long Walk" made.

The original miniseries aired when I was 10 years old. Tim Curry freaked me out so bad, I can't see him in anything without thinking of Pennywise. What a classic performance! Even now at 35 years old, whenever I see pictures of Pennywise, I get a brief twinge of fear!! There's a member here who has Pennywise as his avatar. Whatta jerk.

Never read the book but I did remember watching the original miniseries when it was on. I do remember it was a well-made mini-series and a well-written horror story by King. After all the horror, mystery and suspense, the only letdown for me was finding out that Pennywise and all the other incarnations of evil around town ended up being a giant spider. LOL (Personally, I thought that was lame. King should've just kept "It" a mystery or let the final form really be Pennywise, the Killer Clown.)

  20. That's your typical Stephen King ending - write for a thousand pages and then spend five minutes finding a half-assed way to wrap it all up.

Yep. This is particularly problematic for movies or TV versions of King stories. When its on the printed page, you can still see it however you want or imagine its the mind of the people in the story trying to make some sense of what they are in front of, and the best their brain can come up with is that it looks like a giant spider. That still works okay, but when you make a movie and then SHOW a big spider, it loses some impact. And its not a matter of CGI sophistication or budget, its having an explicit visual representation of "evil" in the first place.

He might be scarier than Tim Curry but he won't be anywhere near as funny as he was in the miniseries.

I, of course, had to look for that clip on Youtube. The girl was Denise Richards! Of course you had to look! (And she was really 21-years old appearing on that show.)

I'd think you could re-imagine that "spider" took look like some HR Geiger creature and make it pretty horrifying.
