Thats right, I tried to watch it. on Retro tv. It's stupid ,unfunny and borders on teenage kids sense of humor
were born in 50 and 60's. I have sense of humor but, whole thing is like bad acid trip
And have never did LSD. And lasted almost 6 years? Then they are having a live
show making fun of Sharknado 2 really? the movie is spoof in itself. reaching....
How much more can somebody make fun of it? with stupid unfunny comments.
I don't get the cult following of this ? The best person to make fun of movies
was Elvira, she had wit and she was laugh out loud funny and sexy of course.
Those guys who created Mystery lost in someones basement ,are really talentless boobs.

I think it's safe to say that you're in a very small minority with this opinion...

It was a great show in the first 4 or 5 years it was on, but in truth, a lot depended on how good/bad/ugly the movie they played was. With great source material, it was really hilarious. The Mystery Science Theater feature, with This Island Earth, was bloody hilarious.

MST3k: The Movie is a good example of the studio screwing over a great movie (released in few theaters, little promotion) in order to promote a terrible one (Barb Wire) that they thought would make them more money.

The very first joke cracks me up every time I watch it.

(We open on the Universal International "globe" logo)

CROW: It's the nicest weather Earth has ever had!

MIKE: Doesn't the fact that it's universal make it international?

MST3K in general is close to being the funniest thing I've ever seen. Do you 'get' the jokes? There are many obscure and now-dated pop culture references being tossed out, so if you don't pay attention to that sort of thing, you won't find it funny.

Given the remark about "teenage kids sense of humor," I'm guessing you think this sort of humor is too lowbrow for you?

What's weird is that the riffs in the theater can be pretty highbrow and obscure.

MST3K is one of my favorite TV shows ever, and I'm far from having seen all of them. Watched a bunch when they were first aired, and then some bootleg videos ("keep circulating the tapes!") and then a bunch when they were part of Amazon Prime Instant. I occasionally watch some of the ones on YouTube but kids and time have conspired to keep me from watching very often. But every time, it's at least funny, if not completely hilarious. Pod People is an absolute favorite. "Trumpy, you can do stupid things!"

If you're not up on pop-culture (especially things that were relevant at the time these were filmed) then this show is going to be a massive dud for you. Even if you are up on pop-culture, there's a lot of stuff that confounds me. Doesn't keep it from being funny, but it's a rare show in that what's funny is different for everyone.

I don't like grapefruit. I should make a thread about it!

MST3k has actually made me smarter because if I knew I didn't get a reference, I'd go look it up so I'd understand the joke. :)

MST3K is far more intelligent and insightful than most give it credit for.

I mean, sure, maybe not on Elvira levels but...

I watch it with my dad sometimes. I get most of the jokes, but occasionally he has to explain some of the more obscure references that were before my time.

Yeah, a lot of the jokes reference TV shows or movies I've never seen before.

And a lot of the jokes are about things that were topical at the time, but have kind of faded into obscurity. This is a common complaint with new viewers who weren't old enough to remember (or weren't even born!) what was going on in the world when the series was on the air.

I generally get the pop culture references, but it's the "real world" references I sometimes don't get.

I sincerely believe MST3K is one of the greatest American cultural products, ever.

They actually made it a point not to make TOO many topical jokes because they knew they'd become really obscure down the line.
