Who are your big 3 country-rock bands and why?

For me, the Flying Burrito Brothers set the template for blending country songs with rock themes and an R&B beat.

Poco took it to the next level with tremendous playing and tight arrangements.

Eagles built on the foundation with incredible songwriting and harmonies.

    Who are your big 3?

    Doug Sahm
Neil Young (obviously only some of his catalog fits here)
    The Band (can't help adding a 4th)
    edit: or 5th (The Byrds)

In many ways, I could say the real DNA for me is Buffalo Springfield. I love its music, but it also led to so much more: Poco (which begat the Eagles), Neil Young, Stills (Mannasas -- one of my top albums ever), Flying Buritto Brothers (which begat Gram Parsons more or less). And we have the Byrds > FBB with Chris Hillman > Desert Rose Band, etc. And we can continue to draw the line from all these to Uncle Tupelo, Jayhawks, etc.

    Plus not far behind:

    Mason Proffit/Talbot Brothers
    Dillard & Clark Exhibition
    The Eagles (pre 1976)
    Poco
Ian Matthews (solo & various bands pre 1975)
The New Riders of The Purple Sage
    Pure Prairie League
    International Submarine Band

I don't think I'd classify Sir Douglas Quintet (Doug Sahm) as "Country Rock". A few songs are but not whole albums or have I got that completely wrong?

I see one person mentioned Rick Nelson and the Stone Canyon Band, yet they really were the first
to actually develop "country rock" back in the 60's. From wiki:
"In the mid 1960s, Nelson began to move towards country music, becoming a pioneer in the country-rock genre. He was one of the early influences of the so-called "California Sound" (which would include singers like Jackson Browne and Linda Ronstadt and bands like the Eagles)."
His 1970 album "Rudy The Fifth" is a classic country rock LP, and is essential for any fan of the genre.

Well, I've thought long 'n' hard about this over the morning. Then, I reached in the recesses of my mind for the long-unused criteria, which came out of being knocked for a loop by Manassas:
"You really need at least a pedal steel in there to make work."
That being the criteria, my faves would be:
Manassas - To me, Manassas, always sounds like the world's best, can-do-anything, road band.
The Flying Burrito Brothers - This isn't fair, but is where I went because there wasn't enough Manassas. Well, at least give me points because I'm honest.
Poco - These guys are just good at what they do, no matter what or when. I guess it doesn't hurt when you have the worlds best pedal steel player.

My favorite genre is alt-country/cowpunk/roots, so I listen to the Jayhawks, Alejandro Escovedo, Son Volt, Ryan Adams, Blue Mountain, Jason Isbell up the you know what....but personally I separate country rock from those bands. Big 3 country rock, for me, which means staying power (something I'll still listen to) are:

Ozark Mountain Daredevils. Just as fresh as when I first heard them roughly 40 years ago.

Gram Parsons. "She", "Streets of Baltimore", "$1,000 Wedding...simply timeless.

A third, hmm, kinda tough. I thought I'd be able to rattle off names easily but I haven't listened to the Eagles or the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band or Poco or...anyway, I just don't listen to them. I do listen to American Beauty, so maybe the Grateful Dead (though I doubt they should be labeled as country rock).

Yes, I think the pedal steel guitar sound is a definitional element of country-rock. Or at least a b-bender!
