Was Blue a great band? They're certainly a pain to google.

  3. I have never been fond of "Led Zeppelin". It sounds kind of daft and awkward, and unless you are literate or read it in print, you first hesitate a lot on how to pronounce it (or write it; some casual fans still muff the last bit!).

I mean it's not THE WORST, but given the ratio of "worseness" to how great a band turned out to be, I'd pick this one.

I happen to like the vast majority of rock group names. I think their creators most often show lots of imagination and humour.

I never cared for the name myself, but then, I never cared for the band either

Of the choices listed in the poll I'd vote Moby Grape -- a stupid kid's joke doesn't make for a great band name.

The "poll" bands mentioned all have GREAT names!
Here are some really cool bands with lousy/misleading
names that scare record buyers away:

    THE FLAMIN' GROOVIES
    THE PINK FAIRIES
    BLOSSOM TOES
    BUBBLE PUPPY
    WHISTLER, CHAUCER, DETROIT & GREENHILL
    THE SALVATION ARMY
    SKIP BIFFERTY
    WHITE FENCE

Seems like the OP does not like band names based on fruit (Raspberries, Moby Grape, the Electric Prunes).

What about Wild Cherry, Tangerine Dream, Bananarama, Strawberry Alarm Clock, the Lemon Pipers, Blind Melon, the Cranberries, etc.?

The Band. Great band with no name.

Love sounds like a bunch of ersatz-hippie session singers making an album called "The Poetry of Paul Simon"

    Moby Grape? Gimme a break

Rockpile sounds like the cover band at the Peoria Holiday Inn in 1975

This is an awesome name. If it was too awesome for the masses that's their problem

Okay here you have me. In fact I should have listed them in the poll.

Either all band names are great or they are stupid. Frankly I love all the band names listed. The alternative would something like Frank Smith and Smith Singers, which BTW was the norm before the new style came along.

In today's Google search engine world, groups like "The Band" and "America" are much harder to research on the computer than bands like "The Beatles" or "The Monkees."

I love the band, and after all these years their name recognition, great music and history supersedes this moot complaint :

    BADFINGER

The Beatles is the first one that came to my mind, I must say: most of the time it's just "the name of that band" but it's such a bad name that occasionally you can just about look at it the wrong way and the horror of that lousy pun comes back through musical history.

I also think that The Band is a good contender, but I'm going to dance with the one that brung me and go with Umphrey's McGee & Biffy Clyro. When both of your favourite current bands sound like bad novelty acts something has gone horribly wrong withe the world.

Great band is subjective, but here are some daft names of some interesting bands:

    The Peanut Butter Conspiracy
    Toad the Wet Sprocket
    Ultimate Spinach
    Animals as Leaders
    Gentle Giant
    The Holy Modal Rounders

    Bands named after a place:
    Boston
    Chicago

Don't know if they were a great band because I'm unfamiliar with their music, but the worst band name ever has to be Let's Active. I mean, "Active" is always an adjective;never a verb.
