Inspired by the 1979 thread, 1981 is my favourite year for pop music. All I'll kick off with this one:

    From a more traditionalist standpoint.

1981's a toughie. I liked lots of records that year.

    Bee Gees' LIVING EYES
    SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND
    Lindsey Buckingham's LAW & ORDER
    SHOT OF LOVE
    CARL WILSON
    LONG DUSTANCE VOYAGER
    PETER CETERA (yes, seriously)
    Phil Collins' FACE VALUE
Zappa's YOU ARE WHAT YOU IS
Miles' THE MAN WITH THE HORN

... just too many to pick only one. Sorry.

Dare was played at home so much, that I came to prefer the 'remix' album - Love And Dancing. :shh: But it's nice to have both albums on one CD these days - in the 21st Anniversary Edition and I actually have that in my to play pile... so that is going on tonight. :)

There are so many releases this year, from so many of my top artists of the time, yet I feel that a lot of these albums are less consistent than the releases they had either before or after - or both. So this is quite difficult to state which I like best.

But then, Madness had a run of four excellent albums (with 1981's Madness 7, being their third release) and then the others I do like an awful lot but they are not so memorable or as (again) consistent (which is clearly what I like! :D) If we were allowed compilations, then I say that Queen's Greatest Hits is hard to beat and one of the very best 'best ofs' I can think of.

One I prefer, slightly, over the two I mention above is what I think I'm going to go with - The Rolling Stones' Tattoo You - which is another comp, of sorts... although finished off and compiled from 70s and more contemporary sessions. This is something I only found out a year or so ago, through this forum and it was something of a surprise! I think it should be permitted, as it was previously unreleased and put out as an album in its own right. I would bet that relatively few even today (unless big fans and/or members of this or other online music forums) would know about that. It's certainly the 1981 release I've played most, over the years - although I didn't get a copy until the end of that decade and it was my first Stones purchase.

East Side Story and Arc Of A Diver are good, too, but going with Rick James here.

Ah, but technically speaking, ARC OF A DIVER was released in 1980. What a great, great record, too.

    Another great one here.
1981 was a good year, musically.

I've forgotten to mention FACE DANCES. Seriously. I love that record. I'm not saying it's their best, I'm just saying I love it.
