Kurt Vile is the guy's real name -- what do you want him to do?

  5. Smegma was one of the names being considered by Bad Religion, along with Head Cheese and Bad Family Planning...

I'd say those guys were held back from mass appeal by a lot more than their name!

They arent actually death metal at all to my ears! I saw them last week on TFI Friday, a uk chatshow type thing...they did a collaboration with Duran Duran On the show which was surprisingly awesome. I was looking into them aftetwards as liked what i saw and heard.

Kurt Vile is a great name

The Queers -- never heard their music

The Dicktasters -- again NHTM (did they record?) but they were apparently a NYC band on the scene around the same time as The Dictators, so I always though their name was cool

In 1968 calling your band The Flamin' Groovies was the apex of cool, if perhaps the nadir of commercial acumen

When I was a kid I avoided "The Band" and "America" - two band names that I thought sounded egotistical for whatever reason. Eventually I became a fan of both groups.

...such a shame about what happened. EODM is just a fun time rock and roll band. Total riff rock and very humorous. Warm wishes to them, family friends and fans. ..and to France and the entire world, hoping for more peace and less hate.

The Mummers, a really good UK band that shares the same name as that dancing group of people located somewhere on this planet.

The members of Bitch Magnet have acknowledged that they could have come up with a better name.

    Great band, though.

Kinda funny how "Eagles of Death Metal" got their name. From their official bio:

The story goes that a friend was introducing Josh Homme to the death metal genre. When he played a song by the Polish band Vader and made a claim that the song was within the death metal genre, Homme then referred to Vader as "The Eagles of Death Metal". After hearing this phrase, he wondered what a cross between the Eagles and a death metal band would sound like.

This name never hurt the band at all. They had their heyday as well.

I had thought it meant that the band was to death metal what the Eagles were to country/rock (or whatever you want to call their style of music). Amusing but I understand from these posts that they aren't death metal at all.

A few electronic bands comes to mind, like the British electronic group Crazy ***** (although they've recently backed down and changed their name to Crazy P.) Also, there's the completely hard-to-remember-their-name (and therefore really, really hard to google) electronic artist/producer that simply goes by the name 2562.
