I'm gonna go with The Troggs. They had a lot of punk attitude and zero musical finesse. I dont think they ever bothered with guitar solos. Heck, i'm not even entirely positive they knew more than the bare basics to their instruments. But still, great stuff!

    Jerry Lee Lewis ? Maybe.

    Eddie Cochran Summertime Blues. Yup
    Who. My Generation
    Sonics. Strychnine
    MC5. Kick Out The Jams
    Stooges
    NY Dolls
    Ramones
    CBGB's scene

    In that order.

Definate link between garage, psychedelia and punk. Want an education ? Dig up any of the "Pebbles" 60's Garage compilations and listen. This series was inspired by Lenny Kaye's seminal Nuggets Compilataion that essentially outlined the garage genre. Pebbles went much deeper, unearthing everything from hits to true garage bands, many of which contain the raw DNA of what was later defined as Punk.

Sex Pistols were created by Malcom McLaren after he was in the audience for a Ramones concert in the UK.

I don't see that any individual invented punk rock. All of the bands and people listed contributed to an evolution that led to punk, but it's not like one day it didn't exist and then the next day someone invented it.

I thought immediately of the Music Machine ... but perhaps Iggy should get credit.

You could trace back the influences ad infinitum, but the Stooges were the first punk band. The Mc5 were like aggressive hippies and the Velvets were Andy Warhol's house band. Perhaps Andy Warhol was the father of punk then?

    60s garage rock?
The Stooges then...that's what they were.
even Joey Ramone said Iggy was the godfather.

    the Ramones were 50s greaser...
Iggy was something else. No one had seen the likes of him before as a performer!
He was possessed up there on the stage. Search and Destroy, Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell, Gimme Danger, Raw Power (read the lyrics to that song)
the Stooges were the "dum dum boys"
But Jagger and Richards were really
the "outlaw blueprint" to it all.

    And the Ramones "blitzkreig bop"
was released a couple months ahead of the Damned's "new rose"

(Music) press... Punk rock didn't exist until it was written about.

the problem is that there's a difference between the bands that laid the groundwork for punk and the first punk band. so the thread question is basically unanswerable.

in terms of the former, bands like The Godz, The Fugs, MC5, The Stooges, The Sonics, The Shaggs, The Pretty Things, The Kinks, New York Dolls, The Who, The Velvet Underground, etc., all belong on the list.

the first true punk band, however, was The Ramones.

A lot of great thoughts so far but largely USA centred. Major influences in the UK were Pub Rock, Glam Rock, Northern Soul, Mod and Reggae. Artists such as Marc Bolan, David Bowie and bands such as T. Rex, Mott the Hoople, Slade, Sweet, Alice Cooper, Dr Feelgood, Hammersmith Guerrillas, Hollywood Brats were all massively important.

  23. My best guess, people with nothing to lose. I always think of it as a continuation of rock and roll by other means.

My opinion is that the roots are with The Who, The Kinks and Velvet Underground.
