Goodby Starman my friend, you came to me around 1972 and we stayed friends for ever. I been suffering with kidney stone pain the last couple of days but this sad news made me cry like a baby. I still can't believe you have left us.

I guess this is how many of you felt when John Lennon passed. A heavy two days...

John Lennon's death was quite different - the violence of it, the timing, the complete out-of-left-field nature of it, it was a total shock. I'm surprised and saddened to learn of Bowie's death but it's not a complete shocker like Lennon's death was. Now, if one is a dedicated Bowie fan, it's gotta be incredibly heavy, but speaking as a person who never was a particular Lennon fan, his murder was unbelievably arresting. If he'd have shot up too much heroin, it would have been more benign. His being shot down in cold blood, and the unimaginably inappropriate reaction of many to it, made the world seem irredeemably evil.

I heard that program yesterday and thought this must have been the last song played on the BBC whilst he was alive.
However, in defense of the Sounds of the Sixties team, the segment you refer to was listener generated and not the production team's choice of song.

This picture lifted my spirits a little this morning.
Trying to come to terms with the past couple of days I suppose David did at least have 39 more years with us than his close friend Marc Bolan. Not that that is of any consolation just now of course.
I think we would all agree that Bowie wears the jacket better than Bolan :agree:

No. The brutal murder of a 40 year old man in the street is quite different from the peaceful passing away from disease of a 69 year old surrounded by loved ones and palliative care.
