This is from an obscure band from Mercer Island, WA (Suburb of Seattle) called Grand Theft. It's a sort of spoof of I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home) by GFR. Herfys was a burger chain in the northwest. Aside from the spoofieness, it is a nice example of the kind of raw edged "garage" sound that would make Seattle the musical epicenter in the early 90s.
The Minneapolis band Crow cracked the top 20 with this great horn laden hit, Evil Woman, from their debut album, Crow Music.
And finally this little gem from a band whose name has to be a close cousin of Lynryd Skynyrd. Go Back by Crabby Appleton
Fancy -Touch Me Sleaze classic. Is it glitter rock, early disco, soul or bar rock? I believe it's a little bit of each.
Wow! Shades of the DiVinyls. Although she lacks the smouldering sexiness of Chrissie Amphlett's steamy vocals, there's still the wonderful sense of naughtiness there.
This was a great late night song on underground FM radio. Really cool "Can't ya Hear me Knockin'" vibe at the end. Had a few of Joe Walsh session players on it.
I don't know if this is that obscure anymore, but it used to be, and I love to share it with people: (1972)
This mournful, folky number by Danny Holien was played on my local top 40 station circa 1973, I liked it enough to buy a copy, it was on Tumbleweed records.
This badass jam was the song I looked for forever and never found, although it got plenty of play on my local top-40 station (in San Bernardino), "He's Gonna Step On You Again" by John Kongos;
Good stuff. I first learned about him through the Happy Mondays cover of his Tokoloshe Man, another great song.
OK, I'll post a Bobby Sherman song knowing how unhip he sounds, but listen to the song. Anyone could have sung it but he does alright, I like the arrangement and lyrics mostly. BLUECHIP
I just thought about this record by Marvin Gaye, I remember buying it in 1972 and have never heard it played over the airwaves since, but it's kind of topical now..."You're the Man, Part 1"
Another one by Writing On the Wall, one of my favorite songs for several years now, I love the mellotron on this:
I love "radio friendly" songs and this is one that missed most ears … Graham Gouldman - "Sunburn" (1979)
