Does anyone have the 1975 reissue LP, the one with the different cover...? If so is pressing any good...? Thanks... BK
Art K, your post painfully reminded me of this album, which is absolutely not so bad it's good, but just plain bad and a waste of time for everybody involved, the musicians and producers, and also the listening public at large, and people in countries we don't even know the exact name of yet but will resent us for years to come if they ever hear this album: Cyrus Chestnut, CYRUS PLAYS ELVIS Only my opinion, of course... (Check the cover art: I think it's the 4th time this has been used, including the Elvis one? Elvis, The Clash, k.d. lang and now Cyrus?) Anyway. Sorry. Carry on.
Looks interesting...I missed that one when it came out. (By the way, do you know who did the cover art? It makes me think of David Park.)
I thought you might like to know that I finally found a CD copy from a small record shop in England. Should have it shortly. Thanks again for suggesting !
Definitely your opinion, as I like it. Obviously one of my least favorite of his albums but enjoyable none-the-less.
Interesting. I didn't know that Elvis Costello's tunes have been covered by jazz ensembles. Oh...the other Elvis...
The good selling albums like Smith's and Morgan's "The Sidewinder" are what kept the company in business and enabled Alfred to support and record great artists like Andrew. "Passing Ships" was significantly expensive to record - far more so than a Smith organ trio session that could yield 2 albums. But he invested in Andrew's score for a large group ( 8 musicians, significant paid rehearsal, and the 2 recording dates necessary) to complete the work. He got it done, It came out well, and I feel certain that it was painful for Alfred not to be able to release it at the time - because at that time Bluenote was on the edge of insolvency. I agree. We should be far more thankful for Alfred, Francis, and Rudy's efforts - and less critical. They did an incredible job and have left much for the jazz world.
BTW, what's special about this Deluxe Edition, jiffy? You might have told us, but I forget. Sorry if you have. ... Never mind, I can look it up. I'm an adult who uses those Internet things everyday. Random comment: Still listening to Miles live, PLUGGED NICKEL, "If I Were a Bell" now in the CD player.
