  2. I assume it is about the rent, too bad they couldn't move elsewhere.

If as they say sold "millions" of records/cds where did the money go?

Considering the location, I have to assume rent is the biggest factor here. Sad that I'll never have a chance to visit in person. I was in NYC briefly a few summers ago, but only had the 4th of July to explore and they were closed that day.

  5. I agree, but...

It was too of an esoteric store to have sold 'millions', it lost context once tower and its cut out store went.

  9. Does anyone remember the island/mango records store that was a few doors down?

I don't think they were both there at the same time.

    I was just there Saturday.

Awful news.......almost nowhere to go in New York anymore.

As an addendum to this thread, I heard from a buddy of mine that Rebel Rebel is closing June 30th.

Man, my favorite remaining record store in the city. And not to praise it too faintly, though: it's been my favorite for 15 years. Not a huge store, but a nice fit with my tastes....

Damn, losing Other Music sucks, but this would be just as bad for me. I go to both often. Hopefully, Rebel Rebel is just a rumor, but I've always wondered how they can afford rent on that stretch of Bleecker. So many high end clothing/retail stores haven't been able to survive on that street in the last year or so.

Manhattan has become impossible when it comes to operating a small business. The store owners in Williamsburg are going to be hurt by the shut down (for repair) of the L train in a few years.

Not a rumor, my buddy has been friends with the owner for decades.

Crap, another one bites the dust. Their used CD section is/was easily my favorite used CD browsing spots and they've always made a concerted effort to promote a mix of up-and-coming artists right alongside older stalwarts. A damn shame!

Indeed it is. Real Estate is the coin of the realm in NYC these days.

Anyone got any ideas on how to convince all these foreign moguls to open record shops in their pricey but vacant tax-shelter condos? At least they'd actually be used for something worthwhile and customers would have a view while shopping.

I shopped at Other Music and Rebel Rebel when I lived in NYC for a few months back in 2010/2011. Liked both.

As is happening in parts of Los Angeles; Especially regarding commercial real estate.
Apparently, as long as landlords have a waiting list of potential renters, they have no qualms of sucking retail establishments dry until they go out of business. Then another victim moves in, and the cycle begins anew.
Instead of a good "symbiotic" relationship, it's an ultimate deadend.

Some great popular restaurants quickly disappear because of this issue. But a few were revived as food trucks...
Perhaps these closing record stores should set up shop on 18 wheels....

Funny you should mention restaurants. My husband and I went to eat at our favorite Mexican place, El Charro in the West Village, last week and found that it was closed down. They had been there since the early sixties, I had been going there for 35 years, it was a neighborhood institution.
