Lennon himself called "Ticket to Ride" heavy metal.

So whenever I gnash my teeth at the latest Kanye or Cannibal Corpse track, I once again curse those Beatles for starting all this.

For most however there is a small but vocal group of fans that cannot enjoy the band without embarrassing themselves and all of their fellow fans.

In that case, what about the "beats" of "Ticket to Ride"? ;)

No, the Beatles did not create 'beats', but I would agree that the song 'Tomorrow Never Knows' did predict a certain genre of music 30 years before it became popular. The Chemical Brothers did call the song their 'musical manifesto' after all.

The drum pattern that Paul came up with still amazes me whenever I hear it, especially considering that it was 1966.

Yes, it seems like those responding here aren't familiar with hiphop music and how prevalent the use of "beats" are within it these days. Obviously I'm not asking whether the Beatles invented percussion as a concept (!!) but my use of the word "beats" refers to the popular defining aspect of hiphop records today. See here for example:

Thanks for the historical perspective, interesting to note that it didn't seem to be an influence on the emergent hiphop scene. Surprising to me.

Yes, exactly, I think people here aren't getting the point. The drum pattern is DECADES ahead of its time!! Again, it sounds like a contemporary hiphop beat.

Ha, I was just thinking that, too! How strange the Fabs are to blame for a genre I can't stand! ;)

I don't know a huge amount about Hip-Hop, but the influence that the song had on 90's big beat/electronica is undeniable, and acts like the Chemical Brothers have mentioned how much of an influence the song was. As you say, the drum pattern was very ahead of it's time. My Mother heard the song for the first time thanks to Mad Men, and she couldn't believe that it was from 1966; interestingly, it reminded her of acts like the Stone Roses, and the late 80's psychedelic dance scene.

I totally disagree with everything except the third quack. You need to be more careful with your research.

Until this thread I would have described the drums in "Tomorrow Never Knows" as tribal, making them millennia behind their time.

Everyone has heard the Beatles and certainly TNK probably has some impact due more to the actual sound of how those drums were recorded. However, most music artists (especially beat artists who sample) are listening to other old things besides the Beatles and probably have better knowledge about the history of recorded music than most Beatles-fixated fans.

House/electronic music was far more influenced by a band like Kraftwerk and old funk and soul than the Beatles. Talking Heads were influenced by Eno who was influenced by John Cage, Harmonia and Cluster and Erik Satie. They also loved Hamilton Bohannon and Arthur Russell.
