    Hi again, folks!

I haven't found a conclusive thread about Plays Live, so I'm trying to re-launch the "number games" here.
I'll concentrate on the 2CD non remastered versions, even though Highlights has certainly a different(s?) mastering(s?).

Here's my homework, taken from Discogs info.
DR Database is poor about this title and can't be of any help.

    Which one do you have?

    Europe

    Virgin / Charisma CDPGD 100

    1) 95.5 % - 95.5 % - 95.5 % - 92.1 % - 100.0 % - 89.2 % - 97.4 % - 96.3 %
    2) 88.1 % - 99.4 % - 93.9 % - 100.0 % - 100.0 % - 98.2 % - 93.8 % - 83.7 %

I don't remember if this has been covered, but I think there may be a few "JVC" Peter Gabriel So CDs that are actually identical to the standard V/C - Black Triangle mastering and DON'T have the somewhat unique mastering that we have previously associated with the JVC releases. At least my copy is this way (and it clearly says MFG BY JVC in the matrix).

Just a quick curiosity: has the HIT/MISS compilation something interesting sound-wise?

No, unless you enjoy maxed compression and shaved peaks

I've been wondering about the how these High Res downloads fit in with the 2002 CD/SACDs.

Were the SACDs Analog->DSD or Analog->High Res PCM->DSD?

Are the new High Res downloads new Analog->PCM transfers, or are they a byproduct of the 2002 masterings, or a DSD->PCM conversion?

Do the High Res downloads sound any different (or better) than the 2002 SACDs/CDs?

From DR Database they seem a match for the 2002 CDs in terms of DR values.

    Peter Gabriel 3 96/24 Download:

I seem to understand they are different, since they are generally praised while the SACDs generally don't have a good reputation compared to the originals.

If they turned out to be the same mastering, that would be funny.

Anyway it is possible that they used the original transfers done for the 2002 remasters but did a new remaster starting from them.

    Samples? :D

They are different masterings from the SACDs, I have compared them.

For the record I liked some of the SACDs, but these new masterings are superior. I recommend them even though, for the later albums, they are a bit too dynamically compressed at times.

Some of the SACDs were presumably analog > DSD, while for other albums they were PCM > DSD. The albums started having digital parts mixed in with analog tracks since III.

I haven't checked if the Hi-Res downloads are new transfers, but they are new masterings.

There are some unique remixes, soundtrack songs, and live tracks on that comp too.

    Which ones?

(Do you mean unique to this compilation?)

yes, and I prefer several of these remixes:

    Growing Up (Tom Lord-Alge mix)
I Have The Touch (Robbie Robertson mix)
The Tower That Ate People (Steve Osborne mix)
    Downside Up (live)

Plus some single versions and edits that Cory mentioned and several good songs that were previously Only available on soundtracks (no PG albums).

As far as I know and from extra research on Genesis News Com [it]: Peter Gabriel - Recording Compendium: Register » they're not unique to the compilation:
    • Growing Up (Tom Lord-Alge mix): also in the CD Single for the song
    • I Have The Touch (Robbie Robertson mix): Phenomenon OST (longer, too and less compressed but with an unnecessary extra verse)
    • The Tower That Ate People (Steve Osborne mix): Red Planet OST (longer, presumably less compressed)
    • Downside Up (live): one of the 19 official bootlegs from the UP tour.
So, getting a little anal here, none of those are unique mixes to this comp., at the very most the edits are unique.
Which is possibly what you meant.
    Please excuse my nerdness.

No worries - I can't keep up with all his soundtrack work and didn't realize these were all on OSTs. "Lovetown" was from Philadelphia soundtrack and there was an instrumental version of "Sky Blue" on there from an obscure movie too.

I'm not rich like @c-eling and can't afford to be a completist, so a one stop rounding up of "loose ends" has some value for me! :D

    Rich? Pffft...
Thrift stores and people on the bay not knowing what they have my friend
For Gabriel I think I only tracked down-
    Virtuosity-Party Man "Worldbeaters"
    City of Angels-I Grieve
Strange Days I picked up on release for While The Earth Sleeps "Deep Forest", that and I liked the movie. There is a single for this which includes a 'Long Version', it's been on the buy list for some time
Animal Nation, I like the live version from the Growing Up Live DVD

I have the SACD for Car, but they are so expensive I think I am abandoning looking for others. I have a US Atlantic CD of Scratch which I really like, but the US Geffen CD of Melt is pretty rough, it seems very edgy/sibilant-y in the vocals. Are there better by a recognizable margin CD options for Melt, also I have a US Geffen CD of Security so the question stands for that as well?

There is some debate, But for IV I prefer my Japan over the 2002 Classics cut
III I have a US Sterling Mercury GR cut, I prefer this over the 2015 2x45
As for the SACD's in my opinion they are not worth today's asking prices. Possible only for UP if 5.1 is an interest

I have slowly acquired the original Nimbus for Europe CDs and they sound better. Keep an eye on the bins and the classifieds and they shouldn't cost you too much.

Oops I apologize I should have clarified I was looking for CD, also I have not tried any of the remasters but was figuring the originals were the way to go as my tastes tend to go for more dynamics.
