Thinking about going to see The Mavericks this weekend. I saw them around 1996 and they were one of the best live shows I've ever seen. Haven't bought any of their new stuff since the late 90's (I know they disbanded, so the output is limited). Has anyone seen them in the past few months? How was it? I enjoy Raul Malo's voice, and the band was top-notch. I've tried to find a recent setlist, but had no luck. Thanks
I saw them on the Outlaw Country Cruise in February, don't hesitate, go! You will not be disappointed!
Thanks. I saw that, but there is only 1 setlist there. The rest of those are festivals and venues with the word MAVERICKS in it. Thanks
Just got back from the show. Thanks to everyone's comments. I went, and can't believe how great they are 20 years after I initially saw them live. Hard-working, fun, talented.......they are hard to describe. Absolutely phenomenal show, go see them if they are close!
I've directed concert video shoots of them several times, and of solo Raul Malo shows a bunch of times before they got back together at Knuckleheads Saloon in Kansas City. They are one of the few bands I've successfully gotten other people into. The last Knuckleheads show, there must have been two dozen people there who I knew were there based on my raves, which is a great feeling.
I also saw that they were just on Delbert McClinton's Sandy Beaches cruise a few months ago. From looking at the line-up from year to year, that would be a great week.
Is the guy that they threw out of the band back in the fold? I remember a thread here about it, he seemed to have a huge addiction problem.
So he's the reason we could never get in the hot tub . It was a very good time. They are booking again for next year, but many of the artists are looking to be repeats.
As far as I know Robert has not returned. When he last played with the Mavericks at Knuckleheads, he had been demoted from bass player to strumming an acoustic guitar that was so far down in the mix that it might as well not have been plugged in. It was sad because Robert is from Kansas City, and his parents were at the show (as were Raul's.) For all the crap bass players get from guitarists, they provide the spine of a song, and you have to be entirely present. I hope he achieves sobriety and I'm pretty sure if he does, he'd be welcomed back. Look, it's not his fault he's a chick magnet!
I saw them this past weekend, and he was not. He does have a facebook page, so you could probably keep up with him through that avenue.
I had front row seats through a friend for one of their two shows in Pittsburgh this weekend. What an amazing performance.
@phish I caught the show at The Beacon Theater last night. The sax player (Max?) played a nice lead on their version of Pink Floyd's Us and Them! That was a surprise! The band cooked the crowd (as they've always done when I've seen them)
Max, that's Dave's son. He made a very cool Christmas cd last year, if you are into Christmas music. He also released a solo effort.
He does. He sings a couple songs on the Christmas CD too. SWAY | The Max Abrams Quintet Featuring Raul Malo, by Max Abrams »
