For a rough and tough blues rock band, The Rolling Stones sure had a lot of gorgeous ballads. From 1965 to 1968 alone, I count 24 beautiful baroque flavored pop songs:

    Play With Fire
    As Tears Go By
    Lady Jane
    Under My Thumb
    Out Of Time
    I Am Waiting
    Take It Or Leave It
    Ride On Baby
    Sittin' On A Fence
    Yesterday's Papers
    Ruby Tuesday
    Back Street Girl
    If You Let Me
    She Smiled Sweetly
    Cool, Calm, And Collected
    Who's Been Sleeping Here
    Something Happened To Me Yesterday
    Dandelion
    In Another Land
    2000 Man
    She's A Rainbow
    The Lantern
    On With The Show
    Child Of The Moon

This led me to wondering, would you personally say The Rolling Stones were king of baroque pop?
What other bands can you think of, that have this large a library, for this particular genre?

I've never heard the term 'baroque pop' before today so I'm curious to see other examples. I hope this thread grows.

Think "Walk Away Renee" by The Left Banke. Some of The Zombies stuff too.

I have to admit that I never heard this term applied to The Stones though, and outside of "Lady Jane"--and maybe a couple others, it's a tough sell.

For those who aren't familiar with the genre, it is pop rock that fuses classical music, orchestral pop, and rock :righton:

After Brian Jones left they became a mediocre rock band.
The Downliners Sect and The Pretty Things were contemporaries, made the Stones seem like choirboys.
(saw them all many years ago)

Definitely! To my ears, all of the songs that feature Brian on an obscure instrument has at least a touch of this genre.

Under My Thumb is a grooving rocker

Stones did some fine baroque pop but The Beatles did it better with stuff like Eleanor Rigby,She's Leaving Home etc. I suppose "Because" is also 'baroque pop'

Whatever we want to call the genre , it's far and away my favorite Stones era, and I like most of their things .

They settled into being a great rock band , but the era we are talking about is their most creative with a diversity and adding of different instruments and textures that I have never tired of.

I used to call it their fop Renaissance period , but I'm not concerned what to call it . Whatever it is... I love it

I added that because I can think of some classical music-infused pop that I wouldn't call "baroque." Think Procul Harum, "Conquistador."

How about The Bee Gees, "Every Christian Lion --Hearted Man Will Show You." Baroque pop with a side of psychedelica.

The Left Banke were the kings IMHO.

"Play With Fire," I thought, was more folkish (no, not folk rock) in its arrangement, if not the content of its lyrics. Including some medieval-period instrumentation I once heard on a version of "Riu, Riu, Chiu" on some Vox cassette of Middle Ages Yuletide music (that is, the percussion).
