Sting "57th & 9th" - New Album

Sting is working overtime to finish 57th & 9th (named after the intersection he crosses to get to the studio every day), which has him returning to the guitar-driven rock music he hasn't made in decades. "It's not a lute album," he says with a smile, a reference to 2006's Songs From the Labyrinth. "It's rockier than anything I've done in a while. This record is a sort of omnibus of everything that I do, but the flagship seems to be this energetic thing. I'm very happy to put up the mast and see how it goes."

Inside Sting's First Rock Album in Decades »

Sting gets a lot of flak around these parts (some of it deserved, some of it ridiculous), but the man knows his way around a melody and has written some great songs through the years. I'm looking forward to hearing what a "rockier" Sting has to offer these days.

nice to be able to say that and get away with it no matter what your passion or line of work is.

 

It's not a lute record, but I'll bet sting hopes it's a loot record.

 

Sounds great! Big fan of Sting but he did seem to veer off course the further we got into the new millennium.

 

I'm not expecting another "..Nothing like the sun" but if the new one is at least half as good as "Ten summoner's tales", then I'm in.

 

Finally, he's going to dig out the electric lute!...

 

Heck if he can deliver something of the caliber of Brand New Day or Sacred Love (both of which I really liked).....I would be very impressed. Because I have pretty much given up on him. Sure I bought all the albums since, but all of them clunkers....If On A Winters Night, Symphonicities, The Last Ship and ugh...that lute album....can't even say the name. Seriously, I thought him returning with a rock/pop album was about as likely as Billy Joel doing it. Fingers crossed....hoping for the best....again.

 

Well I'll see if it is a rock or a rock holiday record.

 

It will be interesting to hear what he has come up with after all these years.

 

Home it comes out well. "Brand New Day" (last good album, imo) is quite some time ago.

 

Lame album title. Hope the content is better.

 

Sting needs Andy and Stewart in order to rock. This will just be more elevator music.......

 

Agreed. Ten Summoner's Tales is a fantastic album. I lost track of him after that, but it doesn't sound like I've missed much...

 

How is that lame? It sounds off the cuff without a hint of new age. I like it, hopefully the album is just as underproduced.

 

This is great news! I have renewed hope that something memorable might come of this.

 

He might pull an ABC and make a " return to form" album!

 

How often does that happen with an artist of his age?

 

This will be "Tales from the Sacred Labyrinth" meets "All For Love" in terms of awesomeness.

I hope the material is more imaginative than the album title. Glad to hear this news though; I really liked The Last Ship, and hope the creativity (and beat!) is back.

 

Well if he actually put more effort into his songwriting this time around (and set his ego at the door), I might like this and buy it!!

 

I'm staying two blocks east at the moment. Maybe I'll head over to 57th and 9th tomorrow and take a picture - it'll be the new Haight Ashbury...

I'm in! - and not just because the song "50,000" was inspired by Prince's death.

I like the way it's described as written in the studio with one of two takes.

If it can translate into some great melodies that raw approach should be worth it. (Or, that raw approach should be worth it if it can translate into some great melodies.)

 

I read it as a tongue-in-cheek play on Abbey Road.
