I was listening to Bruce Springsteen's performance of Rosalita (Come On Out Tonight), part of the Maine Point performance from 1975 and the line about the record company just giving him a big advance had an impact with me.

It's been some years since we heard about anyone being given any kind of 'big advance' (the last one I can recall was EMI's squandering of £8million on Robbie Williams back in 2002). Even the idea of 'record companies' now sounds a little quaint and old-fashioned in this age of mass-media conglomerates.

I'm not a huge Bruce fan, but I'd imagine this song (which only makes sense when sung by a youngish man, anyway) has long been dropped from his live set.

Any other examples of songs that give away their age with one line?

I don't know. I don't think about songs that way. I always listen to music for music's sake. If I judge music on par with milk and bread I couldn't listen to anything except this weeks top ten. Not Bach because it has the distinct sound of baroque period or Mozart because it sounds like the classical period, etc...

Well, the whole song is dated now, as was inevitable, but this line stands out, even though I kinda have always loved it ...

Yes, you must not be a huge Bruce fan. :) "Rosalita" is a fan favorite and his most recent performance of it took place three weeks ago.

Any song that mentions "phone booth" or telephone "operator" or "collect call" or...you get the point.

Hmm, maybe we should do a thread on songs that actually predicted the future accurately or that sound more timely today?

Songs that mention the US President even though the president has long been out of office or not even living any more. Young Americans by David Bowie is on example.

Nixon must be mentioned in more songs than any other President; I can only think of two that mention Ronald Reagan.

I don't think of them as dated as much as historic documents of words and/or phrases. Except some of that hippie stuff - that stuff gets my knickers in a bunch.
