SLANE : This is very interesting to me indeed... may have heard this all at one time or another earlier, but it helps me a great deal now.
The particular thing that interests me is that I have a very rare, early first acetate LP of "The Beatles at The HOLLYWOOD BOWL"
It is absolutely authentic and was pressed at Sterling Sound Inc. way back on July 14, 1976 (almost 10 months before the May 1977 official release) Here's the interesting thing, it was made for ABKCO and sent directly to Al Steckler. This early attempt at the "HB" LP is amazing with slightly different song titles abbreviated, different running order, and even different number of songs on labels. This is 100% original. Also have the finale May '77 Capitol Rec's acetate with corrected order, etc. I know that there was another Capitol acetate made in between my very early lacquer
and my final HB acetate. I wanted it also, but these were very high-end pieces, and had to draw the line somewhere. These are NM and the Sterling Sound copy has all this info clearly printed on the title cover info sticker. All so cool... especially with the new H.B. LP soon being released!
Many Thanks for the post Slane.

Cheers Bruce. The puzzling thing about that acetate would be that it seems to post-date ABKCO's involvement with Apple. I have no explanation for that...

    No.

It's a popular parlour game to make "what if" Beatles albums over the 70's and 80's (usually ending when John passed away), but the solo Beatles as a business are much different than the Beatles themselves. I believe it was John himself who said that "any fan could make their own Beatles album by using solo tracks", and it should stay that way; obviously some fans will like "Oh Yoko!" as an album track while others will prefer "Too Many People". But making it an official release as a hodgepodge of unrelated songs recorded by members formerly part of the Beatles is almost a giant middle finger to the four of them and their extremely different solo careers.

My opinion is that the Beatles quit at the right time, especially since in the 45 or so years since "the Beatles" has become almost too perfect in popular culture. You tell someone the Beatles are your favourite band, or that Abbey Road is your favourite album and it comes off as generic. The four of them knew that, that's why all their periods have stood the test of time, and why things like "All You Need Is Love" and Magical Mystery Tour haven't become mere relics of the psychedelic era. It's even happening to John's career with the unfortunate circumstances of his death.

The Beatles as an entity ended 1969 when John quit, and for a few years during the Anthology project. It's great to reminisce and play "what if" games, but everything after 1970 isn't Beatles songs. They're two (or four) different careers.

    Slane,
These lacquers have been a full on search for more info since I obtained them a few years ago...
They are fully authentic, and I personally obtained them from the best well known author, and dealer (hint).
Both came directly from a certain Capitol employee whose tenure was through the 1970's.
I have tried to post good pics just now, but it does not take from the pics on my iMac.. like it took my avatar logo pic with no prob (?)
I think I had this problem some years back and had to go thru photo bucket or some ****e.. big hassle.
Is there a direct way, it just seems to want the url ?
Happy to share actual pics... ?

Bruce, is it possible that the date is incorrect on the acetate? As Slane mentioned, the date seems to be post-ABKCO and post-Stickler involvement with the Beatles. Phil Spector mixed the Hollywood Bowl tapes, perhaps an acetate from HIS mix??? Is the date on the actual acetate? Ron

    Spector's mix acetates 14 May 1971 and 18 May 1971

The next batch of acetates are dated 3 August 1976, predating yours by a month? Also, Spector is the one who originally chose the tracks and from what performances.

Ron, isn't the Spector version the complete 1965 performance (I can't remember for sure)? If so, Bruce, does your version tally with that?

Absolutely yes, clear as day on the labels, have other Sterling Sound acetates , these are real as day is long.
Same large label sticker on cover as others for that time period as well. Just tried to post from photo bucket can't seem to get it..
    IMac challenged LOL..
I can tell you that I was successful in posting many acetates including these some years ago...
I found them a few months ago by searching in the search box, I believe I typed Beatles Hollywood Bowl acetate.
It was down a bit on first page... I am an id on this new iMac 27"
Have absolute provenance from the well known most trusted seller.

This has been an on going history search for me friends.
One of my other dealer friends owns the original Capitol HB acetates from 64/65.
They are untouchable $ and came from Brian E's collection.
I'm vaguely aware that Phil attempted some work with them, but thats all I know.

It has always tortured me trying anything re: adding pics on this superb site.
I wish it just gave you the op to add pics as easy as I added my avatar pic in the profile..
Very aggravating when your a simpleton... basically kidding.
I tried a bit ago on photo bucket to no avail.
The thread were I posted numerous test pressings and acetates was titled something like: Show Your Rare Items.
There were two threads as I recall, best way is the search box. SORRY about all this pic bizz.

I don't think anyone is challenging your assertion or the acetate, just trying to figure out why Stickler would still be involved at this point. Maybe it was an "inside" favor or something? You know, an acetate for his personal library. I'm "photo challenged" on this site too, no worries ;). At some point can you list the performances, timings and certainly anything that is NOT on the 1977 LP? That would be most helpful. Ron

So if Bruce's acetate has songs not featured on the 1977 album such as 'Baby's In Black' and 'I'm Down' on it, then it probably originates from the 1971 Spector version.

Part of the issue is that there's no provenance of ANYTHING being done with the Hollywood Bowl tapes AFTER May 1971 and BEFORE August 1976. That doesn't mean someone at Apple couldn't have provided a tape to Sterling Sound sometime earlier. Maybe Stickler asked for acetates before the end of ABKCO and Sterling was late/delayed in providing them? I suppose just about anything could be substituted as to the reasons why. Ron

This EASILY could be sanctioned by Apple. In all probability it would be an "internet only" release, but you never know. I don't envision a time where solo and group songs would be released together. The ONLY possible way would be a companion album to 1. The group hits on one CD; solo hits on a second. A reality? probably not, but one never knows. Ron

I had a go at this myself in the early '80s. I put together a private album-length compilation on cassette. I can't remember what tracks I used (though the Ringo album supplied two or even three of the cuts). It did not turn out the way I had hoped, and I reused the tape almost immediately. So, that's my roundabout way of saying to Universal Music, Apple, et al, 'No, don't do it!'

Yes, guys this acetate has had me searching high and low for more info... aware of the date discrepancies with Steckler, etc...
I was told by PC all three came directly from a Cap Rec's employee who obtained them during the 1970's, when he was with Capitol.

I agree. But does a Beatles-kid-finishing-off-dad's-music-scraps project have more integrity than a simple compilation release containing solo Beatles cuts?

George Harrison's Unfinished Tracks May be Completed by Son Dhani »

    Or this?

How Yoko keeps John Lennon's memory alive ... with a tacky musical based on his life and Lennon ice cream »

And you have to wonder what happens in the future when the kids and grand kids have full control of this stuff (assuming anyone still cares about any of it) how much integrity is going to matter when there are lots of family divorce settlements and bankruptcies muddying up the works.

As just a casual fan of the solo material, I'd prefer to have the next one in the Red and Blue series.

Green 1971-1975, with just the cream of the crop only.

I put together these compilation CD-Rs to play in the car on a very long trip. Oddly, they did not sound that great when actually played for the many days of the trip. I think that this illustrates a problem with the whole idea. The solo Beatles recordings have such a variety of production that they tend not to flow together well when scrambled up into a compilation. The whole seems to be less than the sum of the parts.
