So I guess that really seals the deal for a career spanning box set not being released this year.

I wonder what will be on this that has not already been released? Five discs is quite a bit of material.

Meh, I'd rather have a Sell Out box - or Who Are You. Don't really care for the My Generation/Quick One era.

Probably 2 discs of mono, 2 discs of remixed broader stereo, and a replica vinyl album - just my guess, though.

Hoping for a good sounding mono CD release of the album proper... The digital-only mono/stereo version from 2013/2014 (?) sounded significantly better than any CD version (with the UK tracklisting anyway). I don't think I want to buy a "super deluxe" to get it, though... but then, this is the only CD that's completely out of print, right? Not that the manufacturer will really care, but still.

In a perfect world @lukpac would be consulted:

Luke, to the those involved: "Sorry, the mastering isn't good enough, re-do it...cut out this noise reduction and loudness crap, it needs to be dynamic...get the best tape sources possible, we're missing songs that need included, it's not comprehensive enough".

I don't know how he keeps it all straight.

That box set likely never happens. The bulk of the "50th Anniversary" tour and festivities are over, although there are some additional shows scheduled for next year. It is unclear of how many rarities were actually unearthed, but it would have been cool to hear them nevertheless. With regard to a 4-5 disc My Generation box set, it doesn't thrill me. I don't love the album that much to where I need to hear up to 5 discs of outtakes and various mixes in mono and stereo. It was an important album and contains some exciting performances, but it is not the era of The Who that I reach for the most.

I would just like a decent remaster of the original mono mix.

I thought there was a good one from Japan.

Im going from memory here (never a good thing!) but I think the Japan version was mastered a little too hot for my tastes.
The other recent-ish remaster had one track, The Ox??? (possibly more) taken from an inferior source (possible needle drop).
Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, it's quite possible.

The 2008 JPN box was mastered quite loud.

The 2012 Collector's Edition was mastered at a lower level, and is probably the best CD version.

The 2012 EU CD was mastered from a tape copy and doesn't sound good at all.

The currently available Who Sings My Generation CD actually sounds quite good, other than Circles, which currently only exists as a needledrop.

Is there enough material for a 5-cd box? Oh, yes: 1) Mono, 2) stereo, 3) fake stereo, 3) reversed stereo, 4) extras and 5) remixed extras

Cool, I shall have to track down a 2012 Collector's Edition if it's not too pricey.

I'm guessing the SACD-SHM is the same mastering as the SHM-CD but with the extra resolution?

I don't think the CD is a straight conversion of the SACD, but I think they are quite similar. Both taken from the mono masters, minimal EQ or compression, etc.

I'd love just a well mastered single disc of the original mono album with mono versions of all the B-sides and tracks from the Shel Talmy sessions as extras. bFrom the best sources available. I'd also love a similar disc with A Quick One.

I wonder if they'll include The High Numbers material in original mono on this set.

That's the mono disc of the 2012 SHM set.

Also the mono disc of that 2012 SHM set. Stereo is more problematic in that case.

Cool, thanks for all the info.
I shall see what the mastering is like on this box set, but if it's not great I shall invest in the SACD.
