I would LOVE for them to come here and give Zia a run for their money.

  3. No way they paid 9 mil in '91 in that location. Possibly half that or less.

I wasn't talking record stores but music scenes and art colonies. If the rich buy out an area then somewhere else will become "the" place to be.

Zia is the only real game in town, but they are just too small an operation.

Yes, I remember reading that back then, that as well.
In the long run, it was too bad that the labels were so draconian with their drastic actions, such as cutting off accounts.

That was probably around the time I preferred to shop at Rhino in Westwood, Aron's, and Rene's All Ears (both on Melrose Ave). Then I could choose to buy both new and used music.

    I've heard it before...

Purely from an aesthetics/PR point of view it would be impractical to admit if they were indeed moving ...

I can show you Nordstrom stores with fewer shoppers on weekdays at lunch hours.
But I mainly go to the Hollywood store on weekends and the SF store on weekdays around dinner time on weeknights (pre-concerts, I always go). Either case, very busy. No one would mope around Amoeba "Wahhh, everyone is streaming!". We stream too, but it isn't a replacement for Amoeba. The following is fierce,

Most Rasputin stores suck in 2016... But the Berkeley new and used vinyl selection is really great. Will have to go see it re-presented in the new space.

My dear boy, you don't think Zia can compete with Amoeba? All the romance novels and ******** toys?

I love the Stranded that took over Aquarius... Better than the Oakland location and well-presented.

Unlike the diversity found in Mill Valley :) Zing! Just kidding.

  14. But Mill Valley has sort of always been like that. Very white. Not the entitled part but not diverse like the Mission was. Artists, musicians and Latinos are being pushed out. Any house is over a million bucks now and most much more. Even dumps. I sold out because I was lucky and owned a home. Again it's what is happening to most great cities.

I need to get over there. As a longtime Aquarius regular, it's been too painful for me so far.

There's something to be said for that - porn/Kung fu flicks, drugs, whores and "rap" booths (remember those, like in Madonna's "Open Your Heart" video) - the "gritty" New York for those who love Scorcese's Taxi Driver. On the other hand, as a parent, I prefer a safer city.

It was for me too til I found original UK Smiths singles in mint shape, an Original "Pretty Hate Machine" on TVT, and a Cure "Bloodflowers" on vinyl

No wonder you're happier than when it was Aquarius.

No, it was not super cheap, the real estate market (and recession) has not yet crashed. And think about it, it's a very large chunk of a block. Couldn't have been a cheap or "on sale" at the time.

I've always thought that with the huge mortgage payment they must have, and then the staff to run a store that size equals really high overhead for them. That is why the prices are eternally high. Some in this thread suggest low overhead, and I think Amoeba's must be out f'in' ragious.

I've only ever been there once, while on vacation.... but I came home with one of the biggest loads of CDs I've ever bought at one time! Hopefully they don't close down, because I ever go back to LA, it would definitely be a must-visit again.

It'll be around for another decade, at least. According to the articles. I hope that's true and that they relocate when the time comes.

I'm speculating that they sold the building because they were made an offer too good to pass up. They may have figured that at some point soon, the music retail business would shrink or dry up, and they could either more to a smaller location, or call it a day.

As far as where they are located now, it's great! It's easy to get to, and, there's parking right across the street.

If you are reading the same article I am, there is two years left on the lease, and then Amoeba is likely to move to a different location also on Hollywood.

The new development being planed is high rise residential with retail on street level. Amoeba would be welcome to rent out this retail space (for 3 times what they are paying now), but is unlikely to do so, and is already looking at other options.

The good news is that Amoeba (claims to) wants to stay in Hollywood.

The PR company hired to smooth this over is very good in their writing which revealed nothing new, but confirmed (to me anyway) that the building was sold, and Amoeba is looking elsewhere, and two years before the lease is up, and their rent will skyrocket.
