Wonder what people's thoughts are on what makes a Telecaster? Some potential arguments:
-body shape with no comfort sculpting on the back
    -strings through the body
-two single coil pickups, with the neck pickup covered
    -skinny headstock
    -solid body
-the bridge with saddles shared between two strings so intonation is never perfect‎

Of course, there are versions of the Tele that deviate from all of the above. In particular, I've noticed the Tele Deluxe, a 70s model with humbuckers, an oversized headstock, and Les Paul-style tone and volume controls, becoming increasingly popular, especially in alternative/indie circles.

My '95 US standard Tele has been my go-to guitar for twenty years, although it has six saddles instead of the classic three. ‎

I think of it as mainly the single-horn body and headstock style. The single coil at the bridge would be the next 'essential' item. You see a lot of old-timey players with a humbucker in the bridge slot.

I do like the 3 saddle bridge, I wouldn't begrudge anyone the modern bridge, but the old school one is for me.

There was no such thing as an "American Standard" Strat when Buddy was alive. It was just a Fender Stratocaster then, there was only one kind.
