I have an opportunity to buy a NM copy of a UHQR Sgt Pepper for a price that I can afford but I'm undecided on buying. My UK mono first pressing has always been my favorite version but I would like to have a great stereo version too and I've always been intrigued by the UHQR release. I know that there are many stereo releases available and I've gone back and searched the threads on the UHQR Pepper and as can be expected the opinions vary from the best Pepper that I've heard to it is OK. What would you do?

It's a collectible, but I don't think it's the best sound option. If you want a nice collectible that sounds "okay", have at it. I'd be intrigued too, for the right price. *

*In my case, most sellers would be insulted by my right price. :)

I would be very happy to stick with what I have, which is the 2012(?) stereo remaster. I know that it was sourced from digital files and all, but it is a sonic delight.

I think it's nicer than the copy I have from the Mono box, and that's the only stereo re-release I can say that about.

And I'd rather have the MFSL than that. Boom! Opinions! :D:angel:

I'd be looking for which of the MFSL Sgt. Pepper releases sound good. Having heard one I can verify that even the Japan 1st CD sounds better and that's a first except for the black triangle Abbey Road of course. Apparently there is a good sounding MFSL but I'm not familiar other than just reading years ago.

And if I have the pleasure to hear the MFSL, I'd probably agree with you completely!

I'd wait for Apple to release an AAA stereo boxset! Like I've said before, there is now a new release AAA stereo Red & Blue LPs so you know it cant be that far behind....

:D Don't bet the farm on it. I've read there are two distinctly different mastering/pressings of this one.

You never know with Apple but it might happen.

I would agree that this falls more into a collectible category. For those interested in label variations, this is indeed a rare version of that album. It is one of the better sounding vinyl releases of Sgt. Pepper. As to whether it is the best version, opinions will vary.

both the UHQR and individual MFSL sound great, I've not heard the box set MFSL version which is a different mastering, but those 2 are wonderful.

  12. What would I do? If I could afford it then I'd buy it. If I listened to it & really dug it I would tell a buddy to buy some beer & come over to listen to it. If I listened to it & didn't dig it then I'd sell it & buy more beer.

The (stereo) mint copy I have in my UK Blue Box has either -1 or -2 stampers and sounds spectacular. Flat and perfectly centered, it is difficult - if not impossible - to decide whether I like it or the one from the Mono Box better. Don't know how much the UHQR is selling for, but you can probably get an excellent UK Blue Box for less than $400 (mine cost a little more than that). Good luck!

And I forgot to add: you could ask the seller for the matrix information before purchase. Also, this record is thicker and "stiffer" than the others in the Blue Box.

I've heard the UHQR Pepper. It is night and day better than any other pressing. My friend owned it and one night we compared it to British, German, Japanese, Capitol C1 pressings etc and the UHQR blew them all away. The only reason I didn't get one is because I never liked that album much. But if you want vinyl nirvana, UHQR is it.

when I first bought it around '82 I was blown way as well. It still sits pretty on the shelf, copy 2,1-- out of 5,000. It's very punchy and has great presence.

Actually, of the three Sgt. Pepper MoFi vinyl releases, I prefer the one mastered by Jack Hunt. It is a variation of the standard release, not the UHQR.

    And yes, I have compared.

I have the UHQR, and I never play it because I like the mono version. It's a very nice item to own if you are a collector. One word of caution - I have noticed that a number of copies have discoloration of the paper insert that is included in the UHQR. Since the insert is not exposed to light, it's my strong suspicion that the foam inserts can deteriorate, causing the discoloration. I would check the foam and if it is getting stiff or "crumbly", I would check the inserts and vinyl for any signs of damage. I have removed the foam and store it separately from the box.

I listened to my first pressing mono UK copy this morning and it really is everything that is Sgt Pepper for me. If I buy this UHQR copy it probably would be more of a collectors item. I'm sure it would get played though.

I heard years ago that the Hunt mastering is the best of the MoFi's. However, I have not heard any of the MoFi pressings myself. Does anyone know how to identify the Hunt version?

I do have a 1978 Blue Box and that version is wonderful.

If you decide to pass I would be interested. I'm a Beatles 'completist' and that one's a gap in my collection!

If it's at a good price, you have nothing to lose. If you listen to and decide it's not all that, you can sell it without losing any money. It's not going to drop in value any time soon.

How does one tell between the different MoFi releases. I have one of which I bought second hand. And I only see one entry for a MoFi LP on Discogs.
