...as it happens I am reading Lee's excellent book on Tim Buckley "Blue Melody" whilst listening to the budget Tim 5CD box. Have had Tim's "Dream Letter" 2CD set since 1990 but this is first time I have got into the rest of the catalogue!
David Lindley doesn't get much press. Probably because he has taste and plays to the song. But if you took his parts away, the material would suffer.
I love David Lindley and Roy Buchanan, but I'm not sure how much I'd call them underrated. They're both "musicans' musicians" who have very high reputations among other musicians and among geeks. A lot of the guitarists on this thread (e.g. Easton, Hidalgo) don't usually turn up at all when people (musicians or otherwise) are talking about great guitarists, but they really should.
Underrated by the general public and in 'best guitarist' lists: Buck Dharma Tommy Bolin They do get a lot of love from the knowledgeable fans on this forum though.
Stood 15 feet from him in a very small club in Mpls. for the evening, while he was with Badlands....such a great band....the club let people bring in cameras, so I took 20 or so photos of Jake....had the photos blown up....Got some great shots of his hair flying, in all directions....the cat can play, no doubt...wish I could find them...somewhere in the house....ahhhgggg...
Oh, there have been three or four threads on this but most are old or closed , so have at it. Who's your favorite underrated guitarist? » Name your favorite 'underrated' rock, blues, or jazz guitarist » Underrated guitarists? »
Tommy....no kidding.....sometimes on his demos and unreleased things, I sit back on ask myself, is that guy human? kind of the same feeling I get from hendrix sometimes....I mean come on....who can play like that? His stuff on whips and roses 1, is beyond belief....anyone who has only heard Teaser, hasnt even scratched the surface. and buck.....for sure.
Jim McCarty of Cactus. Listen to his solo in Rock N' Roll Children from the album One Way... or Another.
Neal Schon. I know, I know, he has been lauded but I always felt that he was overshadowed by Steve Perry and was never mentioned in the same category as Van Halen, Jeff Beck, Clapton. His solos are brilliant.
And some have said what does under rated really mean? I don't know, but I have talked to so many so called knowledgable music folks, who don't know who Tommy Bolin or Paul Kossoff are. Or John Cippolina...are they under rated? I don't know...just know they were fantastic players...There are many hundreds of great players that few people under 30 have ever heard of...
